Backpacking in Estonia: Staying at Euphoria Hostel, Tallinn

After loving Lithuania and ahem passing through Latvia, I found myself in Estonia for the first time in January 2015. I first headed to the capital city Tallinn and I spent my first three nights in the best hostel in town – quirky, vibrant, happy and youthful, the Euphoria Hostel is the place to stay for sure! It’s situated near Freedom Square and is a great spot to start your journey exploring Tallinn.

From the main bus station in Tallinn (Autobussijam), I headed on a number 17 bus (you can also take the 23) to Freedom Square, then I crossed the road back away from the square and church and down the street called Roosikrantsi.

So this was my home for three nights and as I arrived on a Sunday, it was straight into the live music experience! Here are five reasons why I loved my hat trick of nights in the Euphoria Hostel.

1. Welcoming Staff

On arrival I met Maria at reception. Immediately I was shown around the hostel and welcomed. I would be staying in a 10 bed dorm. Then I met Jonathan the manager, an Australian traveller and music lover who ended up here in Estonia. Next morning I met Mari, another local lady working here. In contrast to their neighbours Latvia, Estonian people are warm hearted, welcoming and friendly.

2. Sunday Music Nights

When I heard that on Sundays they have a live music night here at Euphoria Hostel, I was so intrigued. My days of managing a rock band gave me a passion and a taste of real life live music.

On Sundays just rock up with a guitar, some drums, a tambourine or anything really and play your heart out. Excellent renditions of “With a Little Help From My Friends” by the Beatles will linger long in my memory.

3. Wi Fi

Not only did I have in the room Wi-Fi but my ten bed dorm even had a ledge overlooking the street from the window. I planted myself here a couple of afternoons and evenings to get work done!

4. Old Town Location

Most backpackers that are new to Tallinn will want to head to the Old Town to explore. This is by far the most touristy yet for me the best part of the city, for sights and just general places to go and things to see. Being just a 2 minute walk from Freedom Square and 5 minutes walk from Town Hall Square makes it ridiculously easy to get your bearings from the offset. You can explore most of Tallinn on foot from here!

Not to mention bars, cafes and restaurants. Tallinn is a fantasic city day and night. I loved it. I even worked out how to eat at the city’s coolest medieval restaurant, Olde Hansa on the cheap (vouchers 😉 )

5. Cosy Lounge

With soft low lying sofas, lots of space, board games and musical instruments, the cosy lounge is a place to relax, chill, socialise and hang out. This is a social backpacker hostel, none of your “where are you from? where are you going?” sh*t that grills me. You get real travellers here. None of your “I had 2 weeks in Bangkok, dipped into Ankor Wat” and they’ve seen the whole world eejits.
