Backpacking in Finland: Staying at the Euro Hostel, Helsinki

After catching up with my friends in the town of Jarvenpaa, I headed back to Helsinki by train and decided to book into the coolest backpackers hostel in the city – Eurohostel. Why is it the coolest? Because it’s the hottest! It comes with a free sauna every morning, for those up early enough. So if you’re on a backpacking budget and want to enjoy the delights of a Finnish sauna without paying any extra, then this is the place to base yourself.

1. Free Morning Sauna
My number one reason for choosing Euro Hostel over any other is the free sauna. You have to try a Finnish Sauna when you are in the country and being on a budget – get yourself booked in here, lose your clothes and get naked with other blokes at 7am in a hot room. The sauna is open from half six till half nine every morning. I also had a real life Finnish homestay and Suomi Sauna and Snow Dive while backpacking in Jarvenpaa. If time and energy permits, I will hopefully write about that too.

2. In Room Wi-Fi
Before my laptop, hard drive, book chapters and business packed in, I was loving my in room free fast Wi-Fi here at Euro Hostel. I had a twin dorm where I shared with just one other guy (from Finland) and I had a desk to get my work done. It’s taken me 25 hours to type this single one blog post incidentally in two different countries on 5 different computers so if you’re reading this and it reads OK then my stress levels may go down a notch.

3. Island Location
I loved the way the Euro Hostel is actually situated on an island within Helsinki. This might come as a surprise to you. It’s connected by tram and a bridge though, so you won’t need a boat to get out to the Euro Hostel which is on the island of Katajanokka. You’re also right beside one of the key sights in the city – the Uspenski Cathedral.

4. Downstairs Bar and Restaurant

If you want to avoid a jaunt out at night or in the morning, you can head downstairs to the bar and restaurant. A great selection of food and drink and even live sports.

5. Tourist Information
On the ground floor there is a massive lobby with tourist information, leaflets and friendly staff. You can also buy souvenirs, look at maps and book your onward transport from here. All in all this is a very big, well organised, homely hostel to base yourself in when backpacking in Helsinki, Finland.
