Backpacking in India: Staying at the Travellers Inn, Mumbai

“Down in a den in Bombay. Slack jaw, not much to say. I said to the man are you trying to tempt me? Because I come from the land of plenty” – Men at Work.

Inspiration for my visit to Mumbai (formerly Bombay) came from a few sources. A Michael Palin documentary on BBC, a song by Men at Work and the chance to sample Bombay Sapphire gin, actually in Bombay. I backpacked it after getting a night train from New Delhi and here I found a cool base at the Travellers Inn. This proved to be a perfect place to stay, to meet other travellers and it’s in a good location.

Why should you stay at the Travellers Inn? Here are five reasons that make this the best backpacker hostel in Mumbai, India!

1.Cheap and cheerful
With dorm beds from 800 Rupees ($11 US) and up, this is a pure fire cheap backpacker place to save the pennies in one of India’s dearer cities. I shared a 3 bed dorm with Phil and Joe from England.

2.Cool Welcoming Staff
The staff were smiling on arrival, Mohit was expecting me.

3.Rooftop Breakfast
Having breakfast on a cool balcony at the top of a building seems to be becoming a trend as I backpack through India. First my breakfast at the Smyle Inn Hostel in New Delhi, and now here. Excellent breakfast served from the chill out zone on the top floor (of 3).

4.Sightseeing Tours
You can organise all your sightseeing tours here. Mumbai can be daunting for the first time backpacker, so it’s nice to have someone to guide you around. You can do slum tours, city tours as well as a trip to the UNESCO Elephanta Island.

5.Fellow Backpackers
I’ve been travelling with my Brazilian friend Katia for some of my time in India and we also met some cool other travellers including Joe in my dorm. Joe, Katia and I enjoyed a night on the rip in this place, featuring the essential BOMBAY Sapphire gin and tonic in Bombay itself.

I’ll be writing more about Mumbai, Ahmedabad, New Delhi and Vagator when I get time, it’s a hectic and crazy time here in India!
