Backpacking in Switzerland: Staying at the Urban Hostel Culture in Basel

“She’s a Nazi, She’s a Nazi, She’s a Nazi Way oh Way” – Switzerland (Cheatzerland) supporters.

This was a weird one, as I have only ever been to Switzerland twice in my life and both times have such similarities to them.

  • They were both in years ending in 7.
  • I also visited a wacaday republic on each trip (2007 – Liechtenstein, 2017 – Romkerhall).
  • They were both to watch Northern Ireland away matches
  • We were unbeaten and the better team in both matches (4-1 v. Liechtenstein, 0-0 v. Cheatzerland)

So after a train through Poland, Germany and Romkerhall, I arrived at the train station in Basel and headed to check in to the Urban Hostel Culture before the big match – Northern Ireland’s first World Cup play-off since 1958 (when we beat Czechoslovakia to make the Quarter Finals).

Backpacking in Switzerland: Staying at the Urban Hostel Culture in Basel

In Basel, I chose to stay at the Urban Hostel Culture. I don’t really like writing detailed posts for boring countries and places I don’t like, but if you do ever decide to head to Basel, then here are five reasons to stay at the Urban Hostel Culture.

1.Cosy front lounge area
You can chill out in the front lounge area. Tea and coffee, Wi-Fi, chat to fellow tourists.

2.Cheap option
Switzerland is not cheap and so it’s nice to be able to save money and stay here at the Urban Hostel Culture.

Switzerland isn’t cheap!

3.Away from the tourists
It’s miles from the city on a remote side street, so no issues bumping into other tourists! Switzerland is a tad boring to me and I never get enthusiastic about it, even including it in my toilet brown excrement list of bottom 7 countries to backpack! It was on Dornacherstrasse in a random area, the one advantage it had though was that it was only a 10-15 minute walk from the main train station.

4.Safe, clean dorms
I only had one night here but as I was out of the hostel most of the day and night, at football and in the bars, I needed to lock up my stuff. Safe lockers are provided in each dorm.

5.Fast Wi-Fi
For the 10 minutes I was actually in the hostel and not sleeping, the Wi-Fi was fast. In fact I booked my onward trains and buses using it. Here are some more photos from my time in Basel, as I didn’t take too many in the hostel itself.

  • This is what made me want to go there “It’s miles from the city on a remote side street” hahaha so you don’t bump into any tourists. How fast is their fast wifi? 😀

  • I’m certainly finding this an extremely relaxing way to travel – There is actually a large amount of info given about each place we visit in the daily itinerary, the daily talks and also of course by the guides, so I think that on this kind of cruise you don’t need to do as much preparation or research as you might if you were sightseeing independently.

  • Hi Katie, Thanks for the comment and I am extremely sorry for the huge delay in replying to you. I have been going through problems with depression and wasn’t checking the comments or messages that much. I didn’t use WiFi much there – was out all day and night at football so only really slept there! Stay safe. Jonny

  • Hi Shiela, thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed Basel. Apologies for the late response. I have been suffering from deep depression the last few years caused by liars and I haven’t checked or responded so quickly. Stay safe. Jonny
