Backpacking in the United States of America: Escape To Alcatraz

Emerald waters over purple sands appear as you reach the peak of the ridgeline. A waterfall tumbles into the ocean below. You drink in the view from the lush ridge. Your exotic Pacific vacation is just starting. A getaway like this might feel out of reach, but you can find it in California. You might be looking for rugged terrain to climb, or maybe you want to sip your way through wine country. Young or old, family vacations or traveling solo, whatever you seek, look no further than the Golden State.

Experience the Resort Lifestyle

If warmer weather is what you seek, find your way to Southern California and check into one of the beautiful resorts in Carlsbad. Omni La Costa Spa, for example, is minutes away from major attractions, but you won’t want to leave. Guests can choose accommodations ranging from villas to guest rooms. There are 18 tennis courts and two championship golf courses on site. The Park Hyatt Aviara Resort is also nearby. Encompassing 200 acres, this resort sits in the rolling hills of the Carlsbad coast. It boasts beautiful beaches and a five-star rating. If you ever manage to tear yourself away from any of the sun-drenched resorts, amble through The Flower Fields at Carlsbad. You won’t want to miss the 50 acres of colorful blooms. For the adventure seekers, hop in a biplane for a coastal tour of CA. Maybe the pilot will agree to drop you off at Big Sur.

Enjoy the Sea in Monterey

Monterey offers a wide variety of activities for everyone. One of the areas major attractions is the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Opened in 1984, the aquarium is a non-profit organization. It funds marine research, rehabilitates injured sea life, and will remind you that the ocean is our planet’s final frontier. From there, head downtown and check in at Monterey Plaza Hotel for a spa treatment. If the spa isn’t your thing, there are plenty of outdoor activities. Guided kayak tours offer an opportunity to get up close and personal with seals and otters in their natural habitat and provide the perfect opportunity to take great pictures. Depending on how far you paddle, you may come across Pebble Beach Golf Course. The famous greens will be the site of the 2019 US Open.

Bask in the Outdoor Activities

Head back North from Carlsbad to Big Sur. There you’ll find perfect camping spots on bluffs overlooking the Pacific. Hike from your camp to Pfeiffer Falls. At the end of your climb, you’ll have earned a stunning view of the falls. If you’re lucky, after dark you might glimpse the elusive glowing waves. Big Sur is known for the bioluminescent sea life that light up the coast. The hilly terrain is host to an annual marathon. Many runners vacation in the area after they finish the Boston Marathon qualifying race. For those looking to try out their surfing skills, find your way to the beaches of Andrew Molera State Park. There’s a great break and the waters are safe even for younger children wanting to catch a wave.

No matter where you find yourself in California, you’ll find adventure. Monterey, Carlsbad, and Big Sur offer a full spectrum of opportunities and attractions for people of all ages. You’ve probably heard of escapes from Alcatraz, but what about escapes to Alcatraz. Pack your bags, and run, drive, or fly. Whatever you do, just don’t waste any more time before you plan your Golden State vacation.
