Backpacking in Italy: Staying at Madama Hostel in Milan

I heard that Milan only had three hostels, which seemed odd for such a huge city. I had an early morning border train to France to catch on route with the Green and White Army to Euro 2016 and so for my last night in Milan, I decided to stay at Madama Hostel. Madama Hostel is a few stops south of the Duomo and near a train and metro line. This is a trademark backpackers hostel that fits the bill and typifies my hostel lifestyle over the last decade. It’s a one off hostel rather than a chain and it is situated near Milano Romana station and Lodi metro station. I had previously stayed in the rural area of Novate Milanese at Antica Corte B and B.

If you are a backpacker in Milan, this is a perfect option for you, just a few stops down from the famous Duomo Cathedral and with a passion for like minded backpackers. Here are five of the things I liked best during my stay at Madama Hostel.

1.Cool Bar
As soon as you arrive at Madama Hostel in Milan, you’ll be drawn to the quirky cool bar on the ground floor. Happy Hour brings promotions and lots of fellow tourists to chat to. At night, happy vibes and music on route to a “night on the rip” will have you in a good mood in this city of high fashion and historic art.

2.Funky Décor
In a trendy city like Milan, I expected nothing less than a bit of art even in my hostel. The hippy funky décor typifies the fashion reputation that Milan globally has. Chalk a bit of PR on the board or admire the art as you groove to a chilled out tune in the bar.

3.Wi-Fi
All decent hostels need to have good Wi-Fi these days and you can get online here no problem even from the room. I was in dorm 4 and had Wi-Fi.

4.Textbook Dorms
I was in a 6 bed dorm and it was textbook. It had an ensuite, lockers and a hat-trick of bunks (i.e. 6 beds). I was on the top bunk and my room mates came from England, Germany and China.

5.Happy Staff
I was greeted with smiles from the happy staff on arrival and again on departure. It always makes you feel at home when staff are happy and making you feel welcome. Tours can be organised, maps are on reception and you can chat away to the staff over a beer or a decent coffee.

As a bonus, beers cost as little as 2.50 Euros (small bottle of Peroni), breakfast is included and there’s a buffet dinner every night as well.
