Backpacking in Malta: Staying at the Corner Hostel in Sliema

Backpacking in Malta: Staying at the Corner Hostel in Sliema

As part of my backpacking tour of Malta and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, I wanted to experience staying in a few different places. Having already toured Valletta, Tri City, Popeye Village, Gozo Island, Comino Island and a few other places, I ended up in Sliema at the end of my trip. I was back to the textbook backpacking lifestyle here. I stayed in a cosy hostel dorm in Sliema’s Corner Hostel.

This was a great place for my final few days in Malta. I got checked in by Luca on reception and was ready to explore more of Malta. Here are the reasons to stay at the Corner Hostel in Sliema:

1.Dorm Rooms, Common Area
Staying in hotels is cool as a solo backpacker but you don’t often meet or mingle with fellow travellers but sharing dorm rooms and chatting to other travellers was always my style. I did it for years before depression kicked in.

Here at the Corner Hostel in Sliema you can chat to others and make new friends easier. My room buddy Ana became my best friend for 48hours – we toured Mdina, Rabat, Sliema, Paceville and Valletta together and had some great conversations.

2.Cheap and Cheerful
Malta adopted the dreaded Euro Currency in 2008 (previously the Maltese Scud0) so you’ll want a cheap bed if you are on a budget. Hotels in Sliema can be overpriced so the Corner Hostel is your cheap and cheerful option with dorm beds priced from $30 US and up – it varies depending on season, room and day of the week.

3.Quiet Street Location
Admittedly I didn’t really like Sliema- I found it a tad boring and less historic than the rest of Malta. However the Corner Hostel has a nice quiet street location. It’s easy to relax here.

4.Nearby Nightlife
Malta has great bars and pubs and becomes hugely popular in summer. If you stay at the Corner Hostel in Sliema you are near lots of bars, pubs, cafes, clubs and restaurants. I toured the area at night as well as in day and visited St. Julian, Paceville (which seemed to be full of over elaborate and empty “gentleman’s clubs”). The nearest pub is just a few minutes walk. As is the seafront and bus stop to airport.

5.Free Tea, Coffee and “random items”
Tea and coffee is free in the kitchen. There is also a basket with free random items left by other tourists. I made use of a free blanket to cover my backpack on a day when it rained a lot.
