Friday’s Featured Food: A night out in Stepanakert, capital of Nagorno Karabakh!

I couldn’t decide whether this was a Thirsty Thursdays or a Friday’s Featured Food but I ate quite a bit and so I’ve gone with food. You might also be thinking “what is so special about pizza and beer?” And you’d be right – essentially nothing.

Pizza and Beer are what I love – there is nothing really special at all about them but this is my travel lifestyle blog and I write what I want. This isn’t special until you realise the fact…I am on a Saturday night out with my girlfriend in Stepanakert in Nagorno Karabakh!

Most people haven’t even heard of Nagorno Karabakh and there we were eating out in a cool Pizza restaurant having a few beers and using wifi in the capital city of this unknown and peculiar country!

Where is Tashir Pizza?
Tashir Pizza is an Italian and mixed European style restaurant on Azatamartikneri Poghota street, the main street that runs through Stepanakert. You won’t see a lot of restaurants in Stepanakert – this one stood out and was really our only meal “out” in the city – the rest of the time we ate at our homestay.

What did we eat in Tashir Pizza?
I opted for pizza – different types and you pay per slice here, unless you want a big pizza. We did a pick and choose and went for a Small American and a Pepperoni. It’s 390 Dram for a single slice or 780 for a whole pizza (small size) so we got 2 large slices and a whole pizza. My girlfriend and I also shared a cheese salad and she had pasta as a main. A great feast and easily our best meal in a few weeks.

What did I drink?
Nagorno Karabakh is a dangerous spot for drinking – they drink way too much in this country!! A story I will share another time. For now I opted for beers, priced at 550 Dram for a large pint. The brand was Kotaky Gold, an Armenian beer.

Anything else?
Yes we had been backpacking in Vank for the last day or so and arrived back into Stepanakert, toured the city and then popped in for food and drinks. There aren’t too many bars and restaurants about but this place was a great surprise and we liked it. The restaurant opened in 2001.
