Monday’s Money Saving Tips: Free Nachos in the Cantinas and Bars in Mexico City, Mexico

It’s been a while since I did a money saving tip on a Monday and while there are a lot more up my sleeve I felt I’d type this one up while I’m actually in Mexico City!

Backpacking in Mexico City!! My hostel - Casa San Ildefonso!

Backpacking in Mexico City!! My hostel – Casa San Ildefonso!

Firstly Mexico City has blown me away. I’m amazed and overwhelmed by this beast which oozes more life than I could ever have predicted. Colossal it may be, but at the core of a city housing 21million people I see happy laid back locals and perhaps a way of life that I have longed for. I realised how cool this place was from the moment I opened the door of our cool hostel, Casa San Ildefonso. The good news is I love it. I’ve been truly inspired yet again this week just when I thought I couldn’t top attending the World Cup Final then I landed in this place. Buenas Dias Ciudad de Mexico!

Since I’ve been loving and embracing city life here it would be easy for me to overspend and believe me when I find a place I like I break that backpacking budget. I went to Antarctica remember, and the Inca Trail and took my backpack to Pyongyang. Some things are worth paying for you know…But it was a sunny Sunday afternoon in Mexico’s historic quarter (which by the way doesn’t mean a fourth!) and after a day of walking all over I decided it was time for a beer and some Mexican food. More to come on Mexican food. I love it! I chose the La Opera Bar and Cantina. I’d already been to about 6-7 bars/cafes/restaurants by this stage and loved them all.

When I looked at the menu in La Opera I knew I’d have to give the comida a miss. Most meals were over a century!! 100Mexican Pesos is about $8 US Dollars and somehow my backpacking brain thought that’s way too much.

However an ice cold Mexican cerveza was 38 Pesos. Hat trick of dollars, football on the TV (Guadalajara v. Chiapas), sitting at the bar in peace and admiring one of the coolest bars in Ciudad de Mexico. Sold to the Northern Irish backpacker…but with the knowledge that I’d get free nachos. That’s right. That’s how to get a plate of free authentic tasty crispy Mexican nachos. Just buy a beer. Just the one. Yes I know nachos are cheaper in shops and on the street but you can’t buy atmosphere or feeling. And if they don’t bring you your free nachos, then ask for them – it’s not out of the waiter/bar staff’s pocket so they’ll gladly oblige.

Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the wall pumped out as I sipped my beer and devoured my free nachos. Gone in 60 seconds but it’s still a good tip for you. Don’t go thirsty or hungry my friends…head to any decent Cantina or Bar in Mexico City, order 1beer and wait for your free nachos!! Cheers from Mexico City!
