Water – Monday’s Money Saving Tips on how to avoid always buying bottled water.

Water is a traveller’s lifeblood. You cannot go a day without it. But some travellers seem to think they need to constantly buy water in bottles because they don’t trust the local water. You don’t need to BUY water when you travel the world. How do I do it? How do I save money on it?

My water filter bottle – can be used over and over again

OK so before you travel you are best to buy a water bottle with a filter on it. These can be bought in local chemists and department stores. They cost around $20 US. This is a one off payment and believe me the money you save by having one of this is incredible. A picture of my current water filter bottle is above. Once you have your water bottle with a filter you can travel round the world without buying water. The black filter in the bottle takes all the crap out of the water meaning it is safe to drink. Here are my additional money saving tips with regards to water:

1. Boil Water

Anytime you are staying in a hotel, hostel or campsite that has a kettle, boil the water and then simply wait until it cools down and fill up your bottle. If my room has a kettle, I boil the water just before I sleep then fill up my bottle in the morning.

2. Aeroplane Water

If you are flying, make sure you bring your water filter bottle on board (take it out and show it as empty to the security people before putting it through the scanner). Fill it up before you board in a toilet and also ask the staff on the flight to top it up for you.

3. Waterfall Water

Fill up your water bottle from a waterfall

That’s me filling up my water bottle from a waterfall on a hike through Yunnan Province, CHINA!

Yes, when you are hiking, find a waterfall and fill your bottle up with it. I admit this is not always the freshest and nicest water even when it has passed through the water filter BUT it’s sometimes a case of any port in a storm.

Another option is of course to buy water purifying tablets, though they are more costly.

While we’re at it, Don’t Stop Living wishes you all a Happy New Year. I’m posting this remotely from Chocolate Hills in The Philippines. It really is a lifestyle of travel for me. I don’t want it ever to end. I’m off to fill up my water filter bottle!
