My New Backpack: The Mindshift Rotation180° Travel Away

After a few weeks of deciding what to do with my life while I was staying with one of my best mates in Bournemouth, I was excited to get back on the road again and try out my latest backpack. You might have heard my recent nightmare with Tunis Air (far and away the most disorganised airline company in the world) where they lost my bag during my special 100 country trip and treated myself and a lot of other passengers with complete disrespect. So it was time for a new start, backpack wise and I wanted something different. I wanted a bag for the modern backpacker. A bag for the business backpacker. One to keep my laptop safe, my notes all neat and tidy, keep the thieves at bay and still manage to look cool as I climb mountains nobody has ever heard of.

I’m no model, nor do I crave to be or want to be, but I quite like the “backpacking photos” that appear in this post by the way, where I display my new backpack which has already been to 4 countries in the short time I’ve had it including a little adventure backpacking in Kuwait! Get innovative with this one…

My New Backpack: The Mindshift Gear Rotation 180 Travel Away
My new backpack is the Mindshift Rotation 180 Travel Away. It’s the “180 degrees” aspect of it that I love the most. Have a quick look at the video I made on the Bauhinia trail in Hong Kong recently, displaying the features of my new blue and black backpack. It’s a 22 litre volume backpack and it’s my daypack, my hand luggage and my “exploring new cities” backpack. I still have my bigger backpack/rucksack for the longer journeys and to store my clothes and toiletries in. Check out my video:

As you can tell from the video, this is a backpack with a difference – the 180 rotation aspect means you don’t actually need to take the backpack off your back to search for your essential items. Simply store the items you want to access quickest in the rotation pouch. Here are my personal favourite features of the Mindshift Gear Rotation 180 Travel Away:

1. Rotating pouch
The rotating pouch is excellent. This means that you don’t actually ever need to take the backpack off when you are walking. Just put the essential things you’ll need in the rotation pouch and when you need them, just unclip the magnetic clip and rotate it round to your front. Easy!

2. Security
The backpack is secure and tight. There is not much room for manouevre for any thieves! Tie the straps tight and you’re safe and secure. Even the laptop pocket is tight and is in the centre of the backpack – most thieves would assume it to be in the back compartment, but it’s not. Also the rotating pouch is completely attached full circle to your body with straps and clips.

3. Tightness
I really liked the tightness of it. When you pack everything in, it fits tightly to your clothes and feels secure and comfortable.

4. Comfort
It’s a good fit on me and it has padding at the back and on the shoulder straps so no neck, back or shoulder strain or pain. The padding at the back feels good. In fact the previous few day backpacks I’ve had actually lacked padding at the back, so it was a pleasant new feeling.

5. Multiple compartments
There’s an easy to access open gap on either side of the main bag for water and suncream. The rotating pouch had space for my sunglasses, keys, passport and even notebook and pen in three separate zipped sections. Plus the two main inner compartments have a few other mini pockets in them, idea for spare pants/socks, a raincover and my hard drive and chargers. I get to fit my travel and writer’s books in the back and my laptop goes in the middle part, with more room in front of it for books and probably a bag for biscuits and snacks will go in there too.

  • Nice new bag you got there Jonny. I could never go without a backpack wiith so many comppartments. I go tone recently for $40 and how its its goes is first compartment is for Laptop, books and papers, 2nd comparment for everyday clothing, one hidden compartment for my electronic cables/chargers, and a small pouch for my Europe Phrase book.

I find it crazy they insert a front pack compartment thats 360 as you wear it around your waste like a bum bag. But as for passports I prefer to keep mine in a ziplock bag in my money belt and i also keep my cards inside that belt as well.

Its to stop thieves and stuff because if you lose your passport or Debit card then you can be screwed in someways.

Last time i was in London I had a small back pack undernear my vest and this was to prevent pickpockets. I just kept my camera and a few note pad in this bag

  • Hi Martin, Yes I love my new backpack and it’s much better quality than I normally go for. I remember I once paid $8 (that’s $8) for a backpack back in 2009 and it lasted me for 2 years! I normally lock my passport up in the safe in hostels and hotels – it’s only when I’m out and about if I need it, I’ll bring it. Safe travels. Jonny

  • That’s nice Jonny. I just got a 10 Liter Altus Leadville Trail 10, which is all I need when I go out away from my base. Camera fits, lunch, raincoat in case needed (packs up nice too). 30 Euros here in Pamplona.

  • Hi Ted thanks for the comment – sounds like a great bag – somehow though 10 litre is too small for me with my laptop, accessories and “business books” these days! Safe travels. JOnny
