My Top 5 Photographs from Edinburgh, Scotland

I’ve now been to Edinburgh in Scotland twice in the last year and loved my time in this city. If you followed my stories, you’ll know I stayed in the boutique hostel The Baxter both times – a really cool spot. You might also know that I love my haggis, tatties and neeps and enjoyed touring the Scottish Parliament and watching Hibernian FC. Oh and the deep fried Mars bars!

It’s not often I share photographs more than words on here, as I’m mostly about the writing and the photos are just taken to back up and prove where I’ve been. But thanks to this cool competition from London City Airport, the #NoFilter project, I thought I’d bring you my favourite 5 photos from Edinburgh. As a Northern Irish blogger, I often look out for other bloggers that are from less prominent countries and let’s be frank here – there are thousands of bloggers from England and the USA, too many in fact. Scotland has less bloggers, by a long way, but they go for quality not quantity in the land of the Loch Ness Monster and it’s cool to see that Keith from Traveling Savage is involved in this competition too. Here are my top 5 photos from Edinburgh, Scotland.

1.Hibernian FC: Dusk at Easter Road
Edinburgh boasts two big Scottish football league clubs – Hearts and Hibs. Hibs (Hibernian FC) were at home on my visit so I headed to watch them. I got into Easter Road early to soak in the pre-match atmosphere and take some photos of the stadium. I had a pint of ale in Crabbies bar, chatted to Hibs fans and then watched Hibernian beat Alloa Athletic 2-0.

2.Edinburgh Castle
An icy cold fresh wind welcomed me during my entire visit to the wonderful Edinburgh Castle on my first visit in December 2014. As a Northern Irishman I loved being back in this type of weather, beating away the hoardes of tourists and getting some great views of Edinburgh in the snowy winter.

3.Haggis,Tatties and Neeps
In case the magical world of Scottish cuisine has escaped you, get ready for some haggis, tatties and neeps (haggis, potatoes and turnips). The truth about this dish is, that you will never know how good it is until you try it. I’m addicted. I’ve eaten the dish four times in this city yet I’ve only spent seven days in Edinburgh in my life!

4.The Baxter
The Baxter is the most authentically Scottish backpacker’s hostel in Edinburgh. Tartan adorned the walls, a Scottish feel exists throughout and it’s a 5 minute walk from Waverley Station. This is the place to stay. I captured the twilight through the window on the cosy lounge sofa. Everything’s tartan.

5.Vote No Yes
While Edinburgh and Scotland voted against Scottish independence from the United Kingdom in 2014, campaigns in and around the city were huge topics of debate. Some graffiti remains as a reminder and I did enjoy the humour on the walls, this one says it all – just by Tynecastle Stadium.
