One of the highest places I have ever stayed overnight in a bed happened to be on the Salar De Uyuni salt flats and desert tour of South Western Bolivia. The tiny settlement of San Juan De Rosario is hardly a tourist haven or a well known spot.
There were 6 of us on the Jeep Trip (Benoit and Guillaume from France, Alina from Romania and Jorg and Tom from Switzerland) plus Wilma the chef and Christian the driver. The first night, after an amazing day driving on salt from Uyuni past Colchani and walking on an island on salt called Incahuasi, we arrived at our hot and peaceful base for the night – here at San Juan De Rosario.
We stayed in a hotel made of Salt (which I covered fully on this post – Sleeping on Salt ) in the wilderness.
There was no other civilisation for miles.
I was on a money save so didn’t go out to the local pub for once, where no doubt the locals would have been very welcoming and surprised that a foreigner would be in their village never mind having a wee Potosina.

The next morning it was up early and leave the height of San Juan De Rosario as we neared the Chilean border and looked at flamingoes, and the impressive lagunas. A truly amazing journey.
