Staying at the Best Hotel in the Faroe Islands: Hotel Foroyar, Torshavn

The Faroe Islands are magical and you might have seen me raving about them on my Facebook Page or posting regularly on Instagram some epic photos from this tiny, often neglected country. My visit in 2015 saw me visit 7 of the 18 Faroe Islands as I hiked, toured, backpacked and watched football in this small countrywatched football in this small country.

I decided to spend my last few nights here in the capital city, Torshavn. It’s a really cool, under-rated city which offers spectacular settings for the avid backpacker. I was here at the same time that Northern Ireland played the Faroe Islands at football. As a long term Northern Ireland football fan, it was nice to be able to tour the country too and be able to write about my adventures. In a small country like the Faroe Islands, it’s obvious which hotel is the best one when you look at the hotels you can stay in here – I saw the Hotel Foroyar online and booked myself in here.

I’ve mentioned before how my backpacking lifestyle has developed over the years. As a travel writer, app tour designer and freelancer, a mixture of places to sleep is what I crave. I go from hostel to night train to hotel to campsite and I buzz off the diversity. In the Faroe islands, my treat was having my own room with a view in the magnificent Hotel Foroyar.

It’s a 4 star hotel and this is quite simply the best hotel in the country. The Northern Ireland international football team and the Faroe Islands international football team stayed here. It’s easy to see why they chose this place and I loved my relaxing stay here.

Here are some of my favourite things about the Hotel Foroyar. I was in Room 131.

1.Luxury Rooms
This was the best hotel room I’ve had in a while, probably since Cityview in Hong Kong in the summer.

There was also a personal welcome message on the TV – amazing hospitality and arrival gesture here.

2.Writer’s Desk and WiFi
I started typing up my Faroe Islands and Ladonia stories while staying here at the Hotel Foroyar, all from the comfort of my writer’s desk with fast WiFi.

3.City Views
The views out of my window were stunning, but the walk down to central Torshavn from here is a real treat, through the woods then through the coloured housing.

4.Bath and Toiletries
I hadn’t had a bath in ages – travelling so fast I normally hop in for a quick 5 minute shower and off I go. But here I poured a hot bath for myself and lay there with music on. Bliss. Great toiletries too.

Again I could have tea and coffee from the comfort of my room here at Hotel Foroyar. Included in the room price of course.

6.Breakfast at Koks Restaurant
The upstairs restaurant at the Hotel Foroyar is exquisite. One of the best in the country and in the whole Nordic region, Koks serves up local and international treats. I had breakfast in here every morning and I went in at 7 a.m. each time to beat the rush.

I loved the Faroese salmon – outstanding and they have a good range of local bread, cheese and lamb as well as tea, coffee, smoothies, juice, cereals, yoghurts and a hot buffet.

7.Beers at Gras Cafe
The shiny green bar at the front of the hotel is a good choice for local beers on tap and live football.

8.Mini Bar
If you feel like a drink without leaving your room, then there is a mini-bar in the fridge. Room service is also available for food from the restaurant and for an extra 50 DKK you can have breakfast delivered to your room.

I loved my stay here at the Hotel Foroyar – they also have a huge car park and very friendly staff so this is a good spot to relax in the Faroe Islands, but do yourself a favour and get out of Torshavn too please. I also stayed on Vagar Island in Guesthouse Hugo and toured Gasadalur, Midvagur, Sorvagur, Klaksvik, Hvannasund, Saksun, Kirkjubour and a few other places in this magnificent country. I will have more stories to come on the Faroe Islands!

The only way this place could really be improved would be if it had a sauna, fitness suite and swimming pool. Then it could legitimately push for five star. It’s the ultimate hotel on the islands and here are the details for booking:
