Staying at the Monk’s Bunk Hostel in Kaunas, Lithuania

I arrived into Lithuania and decided to hang out in the city of Kaunas the first few days. I had a quick look online for hostels and the one which shot out the most was the Monk’s Bunk. This was the very first hostel to open in Kaunas!

Kaunas is a very under-rated city and really needs to be seen, there are lots of sights to see, friendly people, Lithuanian (and Soviet) history and some great bars.

First up – base yourself in the Monk’s Bunk – here are 5 cool reasons to make this your home in Kaunas.

1. World Wall of Flags
When I walked into the kitchen in the Monk’s Bunk, I loved the world wall at the back. Every time a guest from a new country stays. they have the option of putting their countries flag on it. Crazy to think nobody from Northern Ireland had been here yet, so I was left with the honours of being the artist and trying to paint a Northern Ireland flag on the world wall!

One thing to note though – Viktor that owns the hostel wants to make sure the wall is only for countries flags (or autonomous/disputed regions such as Turkish Northern Cyprus, Catalonia etc.) please abide with him and don’t put CITY flags or State flags up there – otherwise it gets ridiculous! Great wall though! And shame on the English person who got their own flag wrong!!

2. Perfect Location
The Monk’s Bunk is right on Laisves Aleja. Not only is this the second longest pedestrian street in Europe, but it’s the perfect location in Kaunas to start exploring the city. When you walk out onto the street, if you head right and keep walking all the way to the end, you will have explored the Old Town and the New Town and end up down by the park and Kaunas Castle.

To the other side, you will see the striking St. Michael’s Cathedral, behind that you can get buses to Pazaislis Monastery and it’s also not too far from the train and bus station for your onward journeys. All in all, Monk’s Bunk is a great location. Oh and I forgot to mention – you have a local pub too – RePUBlic is a great bar!

3. Discounts
When you stay in the Monk’s Bunk you get discount off other places in town! This is awesome – all you need to do is bring your keys with you and on the back it shows the spots that qualify for discount which includes Blue Orange Bar and Green Cafe. Discount can be 10% – 20% depending on the deal they have.

Viktor is a superb man for information on Kaunas and Lithuania overall. There are also lots of leaflets and information available in the hostel to ensure you know about the best places to check out plus you’ll get a free map and onward travel information.
