Where to stay in Foz do Iguacu – Green House Hostel

Down the years I have stayed in some completely cool, crazy and quirky hostels and one of these days I’ll get a top 10 hostels typed up. The last year has undoubtedly seen me stay in about 30 – 40 hostels round the world including the Abraham Hostel in Jerusalem, Why Not in Tbilisi, Georgia and Durty Nellys in Amsterdam. However, I’ve found a new favourite – Hostel Green House in the magical Foz do Iguacu in Brazil.

I was revisiting an old haunt of mine in July 2014 – Iguazu Falls – those glorious waterfalls that scale the border between Brazil and Argentina. Back in 2010 on my first trip to Iguazu, I based myself on the Argentine side of the falls. This time it was time to stay in Brazil. And that meant the city of Foz do Iguacu. I chose the awesome Hostel Green House.

This was my second time to visit the area, if you followed my travels back in 2010 you’ll remember I crossed from Argentina into Brazil on route to Paraguay and visited the marvellous Iguazu Falls on route. I headed back again in 2014 during the World Cup.

Situated in the city which borders both Argentina and Paraguay, The Green House Hostel in Foz do Iguacu is a place to party, relax, make new friends and have a lot of fun. As hostels go, it’s one of my favourites. If you ever end up in Foz do Iguacu, then stay here!!

I was just googling for hostels in Foz do Iguacu and the name of this one intrigued me – Green is my favourite colour and so I booked it. On a slightly more unusual backpacking trip, my parents would be joining me on this trip. They’re not quite as used to the hostel lifestyle as Panny and I but I knew this would be a cool place and I was right. Here are 10 reasons why you should stay in the Hostel Green House and I could have listed more!

1. Awesome Staff
From the moment we arrived a friendly buzz was obvious amongst the staff. The World Cup was on at the time and everyone was in high spirits. I’ve picked some photos with the staff that make the hostel what it is.

2. Fast Wi-Fi
You’ll know that as a Travel Blogger, I rely on fast wi-fi and the Hostel Green House has fast wi-fi which even works in some of the rooms as well as by the pool. It gave me a chance to keep Don’t Stop Living up to date and to get some more Sunday’s Inspiration posts drafted up.

3. Swimming Pool
Any hostel which boasts a swimming pool has to be high on my list. It’s normally something you’d expect from a posh hotel, but with pool parties in the hot months, this is an extra incentive. Cocktails by the pool and even an ice cold dip was had!

4. Location
It’s only a 5-6 minute walk from the supermarket and the bus to the airport/Iguazu Falls. Hostel Green House is also very close to the border to Argentina. Plus walking distance to some cool bars including Rafien.

6. Pizza
What more can I say but – try the pizza! Not only is it very unusual for a hostel to even cook their own pizzas (they have an oven just for pizza), but their pizzas are one of the nicest I have ever tried!

7. Bar Area
The bar area out the back is a great place to relax as the sun sinks. In fact with the swimming pool in behind, the sun loungers and the magic of Iguacu just down the road, it’s hard to be tempted to head out on the town when you have beers, friends and ambience all right here! Ice cold beers, soft drinks, food and all sorts of drinks available long into the night – the bar closes when you go to bed!

8. Breakfast
A top quality and varied breakfast is available with yet another surprise – a toast maker! I was on the ham and cheese toasties every morning. Free tea and coffee of course as well as a range of cakes, fruit and cereals. Served from 8 – 10 am.

10. Sadness on Leaving
I was only there for 3 nights in Hostel Green House yet as I left I was sad. The travel lifestyle is a busy one and we had to move on, but I missed the hostel as soon as I’d left it. This was my second time to visit Foz do Iguacu (was there in 2010) and who knows if I will ever be back.
