(West) Makarora

A mini airport and an isolated yellow private jet were the welcoming sign to the village of Makorora. Or rather West Makarora.

That and the immense landscape of never ending trees, hills, rivers, valleys and mountains. A feast for your wandering eyes. When everything human has failed you, only nature can set you free again.

The wilderness at Makorora.

Or should that be “West Makorora.”? Or Makarora West?

The cafe and two lonely petrol pumps.

Waiting for the 2.21 flight to Belfast from Makorora International Airport. Like the Manic Street Preachers, it was forever delayed.

I stood in the middle of the road to take this. The chances of being run over were slim. There are not many vehicles about. The road is surprisingly good though, with a few bumpy bits.

Onwards to Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka. Then the town of Wanaka and the adventure capital of New Zealand, Queenstown. Oliver somehow sneaked in in the middle…

Where – Makarora

What – Wilderness and you can also learn to fly there at the wee remote airport
