Backpacking in Sweden: Staying at the Quirky Hostel Dalagatan in Stockholm

My long awaited return to Sweden came round in January 2015 and this time I’d be spending a couple of weeks in the country, starting off in Stockholm, the capital city and heading overland through Malmo, Angelholm and Gothenberg into Norway. With a mandatory dip back into Denmark too to check out Helsingor, Copenhagen and Christiania.

I first visited “Stocky” back in 2007 and had happy memories of a trip where we toured the Vasa Museum, the Old City, did a bus tour and watched Northern Ireland slide in a fantastic 1-1 draw thanks to Kyle Lafferty. This time round, I was reviewing some tours in the city and trying to get my website and online business back in order after some major catastrophes so I ended up staying in the Dalagatan Hostel as well as the swanky and elegant Lady Hamilton Hotel in Gamla Stan. Time and comfort was of the element.

I am always on the look out for new and exciting up and coming hostels – the new kids on the block. The reason being, they’re still an enigma, they’re still undiscovered and hopefully I can introduce you all to cool places I’ve stayed on my adventure thats aren’t the crazy over visited long time popular hostels. We decided on three nights in the Hostel Dalagatan Stockholm and here are five reasons why we reckoned it’s the best hostel in the city.

1. It’s New!
Hostel Dalagatan opened in 2013 so it’s only two years old. Everything is clean, pristine, new and exciting. Get to enjoy it’s luxury comforts before it becomes the busiest hostel in the city.

2. Best Kitchen of Any Hostel
Far and away the Hostel Dalagatan has the best kitchen from any other hostel on my travels so far. Wide, spacious and clean. THREE microwaves. Free tea and coffee from an actual coffee machine (Yes!). Two dishwashers so say goodbye to washing up. Massive clean fridges and cupboards. Lots of communal free food to share. A great way to save money too by eating here as Sweden ain’t that cheap for eating out.

3. Quirky Cave Style Decor
A real flashback to my days backpacking in Cappadocia here as the Hostel Dalagatan is partly underground, some of the rooms have no window and the cave like decor on the walk to our room (room 9) had me thinking I was back in Goreme, Turkey.

On speaking to Emin, the owner I learned that he is actually from Cappadocia, hence the immense effort to replicate that inspiring Goreme Cave Like feel here.

4. WiFi Zone
Hostel Dalgatan has a high speed WiFi zone in the main lobby and kitchen. This was of course essential for me, having to use Panny’s laptop (which has nothing of mine stored on it and is slow and in Chinese).

5. In-house Travel Agency
The reception of Hostel Dalgatan is in fact a full on travel agency. This means you don’t have to look any further for information, maps, tours and bookings. Everything you need to know about Stockholm and beyond so can sort out and organise from here.
