Backpacking in Poland: Staying at Hotel Nad Wierzycą, the Only Hotel in Pelplin

On this journey through Poland’s Pomerania region, next on the hit list fell to the charming town of Pelplin. This is so off the wall, I felt like I had climbed over it. This town has 1 pub, 1 pizzeria, 1 cafe, 1 ice cream shop and 1 hotel. So I checked into it for one night only. I was having a Saturday night and Sunday in the town of Pelplin. Times were hard so this was a religious journey to try and regain my soul, to pray and enjoy my own time again. I backpacked it alone and arrived at the Hotel Nad Wierzycą, the Only Hotel in Pelplin. This was a cool spot for the lonely only backpacker in town. One with a Northern Irish heart. A man who felt the world had crumbled in on him and was ready to end things. But then, a glimmer of hope – Pelplin. Here are a few cool things about this hotel.

1.Right Besdie Pelplin Abbey
I felt spiritual here. The hotel is right beside Pelplin Abbey. This is a truly special place. In room 9, I even overlooked the Abbey and I had a great sleep here and a truly holy time in this town.

2.Cosy Rooms
Again stating the obvious here but my room was cosy – good shower, and even a TV and air conditioning, not that I ever use either of them.

3.Nice Decor
It was a basic wooden decor and white walls. It felt quite holy and spiritual even on the walk up to my room. There is a Jesus cross in every room as well.

4.Peaceful Sleep
I backpacked through Starogard Gdański, Sopot and Tczew just before this and had been suffering from depression so I needed a peaceful sleep here in Pelplin and I finally got it. I rested my head and awoke fresh and ready to walk to the Jan Pawel Hill on the Sunday morning.

5.WiFi
Despite being in a remote place, there is WiFi here. Yes, this came as a surprise to me and I was busy anyway so didn’t use it much, but great to know that the WiFi works fast.

  • I had a friend from University who suffered with depression, but was unable to help him. So, my senses are a lot more aware now than they ever were before. I get really concerned when I hear about those who are suffering. Maybe a trip back to Northern Ireland after you are done with Poland would help so you can be with your family and close friends for awhile. Or at the very least, reach out to me if you ever want. Life is a gift and you sure are making the most of yours! I just hope you are okay and can fathom the energy to get out of this funk that you are in at the moment.

  • Hi Ray, thanks for the message. The weird thing is that everyone who messaged me also suggested going back to Northern Ireland and that made me more depressed. In times like this, you need to be away from family and homeland, so it is the least likely place that can help me. I have appointments with neutral psychologists in Poland which will help, as will getting a flat to live in rather than backpacking through a million hostels and dorms a lifetime. It’s good for nobody. Safe travels. Jonny
