Friday’s Featured Food: Chicken, rice, banana and salad in the Casco Antiguo (Old City) of Panama City!

Today I warp myself back to a delicious lunch I enjoyed in Panama City’s Casco Antiguo – the Old Town. Friday’s Featured Food hasn’t yet had a meal from Central America so it’s time to put that right!

An Atlas beer and a map of the old city – all you really need in the heat of Panama City!

Panama City’s old town is so unbelievably untouristy that you will just love and embrace the charm of it all. Admire the old buildings, have an Atlas beer or a rum in one of the local bars and walk round the old streets without a care in the world. It’s a really pretty place and I loved the total uncommercial aspect of it all. Lunch time came and my travel buddy Eduardo (from Brazil) and I decided we wanted something local for lunch. We wanted to have a local lunch in Casco Antiguo…

So we headed to a street stall barbecue on a street corner in the old city. There was a queue for this type of food and the queue was made up of locals so we were thinking:

– this must be cheap food

– this must be local food

– this must be good food.

Relaxing after lunch by the Pacific Ocean in Panama City’s Old Town. Another fantastic travel moment.

And sure enough it ticked all three boxes as we got stuck into a full chicken thigh with rice, a barbecued banana (this was popular in Colombia too) and some vegetables disguised in the shape of an ice cream scoop which was pink in colour. After queuing and paying $3 US Dollars (OK not as cheap as we thought but still OK) we headed to the seafront gardens by the Pacific Ocean to devour our food. I was only in Panama City as a bonus thanks to a double flight connection but I still got to try the beer, have some local food, visit the Old and New Cities and see the Panama Canal in full flowing action at Miraflores.
