Friday’s Featured Food: Salvadorian Cuisine in Sopon Tipico.

Before I arrived in El Salvador, I didn’t know much about it. I knew they had been in the FIFA World Cup twice (1970, 1982) and that the capital was San Salvador. There were a lot of surprises in store in this often neglected country from backpackers to Central America. On my first night in the capital city, San Salvador, I hunted down some local Salvadorian cuisine just off Boulevard de los Heroes and I was pleasantly surprised. In fact I found a gem of a place! Friday’s Featured Food: Salvadorian Cuisine at Sopon Tipico, San Salvador, El Salvador

What food to Choose?
Now that is the question. I twice had my dinner in here and both times chose a different order from the menu:

1. Chorizo Tipico

Chorizo Tipico!

Chorizo Tipico!

This was local chorizo sausage wrapped and tied in dried corn husks, with cheese, rice, beans, avocado, tomato, lime, lettuce and tortilla wrap.

2. Chorizo al Carbon

Chorizo al Carbon.

Chorizo al Carbon.

Again this was the local chorizo sausage wrapped and tied in dried corn husks but the difference with the al Carbon was it came with normal white rice and a salad with lettuce, radish and cucumber.

The reason I chose these dishes was that I saw the specially prepared sausages tied with dried corn husks and liked the look of them. This is a Salvadorian style of chorizo sausage. I liked the Chorizo Tipico so much that the day after I also chose Chorizo, but the other option this time – Chorizo al Carbon. There is such a wide variety of well prepared local foods to choose from, as well as side dishes.

What drinks to Choose?
Both times I went for beer. The first time I chose a bottle of local Salvadorian Pilsener Lager which was only $1.25 US.

The second time I drank the local National Michelada, which is of course similar to the Micheladas I had in Mexico, but without the tomato juice.

How good was the food?
Excellent. I have to say I loved it and scoffed the lot!! This was great food and it wasn’t just the food and drink which excited me, it was the overall ambience and atmosphere of the venue.
