Hotel with a View: Staying at Hotel Linda Vista in Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Where to stay in this beast - Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Where to stay in this beast – Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

For some reason, the Honduran capital city of Tegucigalpa doesn’t rank highly with backpackers. Most of whom, pass through its elevated streets faster than Ben Johnson on speed. I saw past all Tegucigalpa’s lack of tourism and found a great base for the night deciding to explore the charm of yet another striking yet untouristy capital. And you’ve guessed it, I liked Tegucigalpa!

While admittedly there is no backpacker scene here, or even a decent hostel, the range of hotels is building gradually. But in reality there’s only one hotel you should consider. One that has an awesome view of the city and is in a safe area. That’s why I chose the Hotel Linda Vista. Here are eight reasons why you should also stay here.

1. The View!!

If you know Spanish you’ll be aware that Linda Vista means cracker view/ wonderful view/ beautiful view. The view from the back garden here at Hotel Linda Vista is truly outstanding. Tegucigalpa is a topsy turvy city built into hills.

A proud history of silver mining here is the main reason for the city’s existence and mountainous sprawl. At hotel Linda Vista grab an afternoon beer or an evening coffee and sit in the garden admiring the views. You can see the barrios on the mountains, the Jesus Christ statue, the peak of the main Cathedral and a general mirador of this scattered city.

2. Safety and Security

Even as a seasoned backpacker, health, safety and security are still the top concerns and needs. I was a bit daunted by Tegucigalpa on arrival and despite having survived San Pedro Sula’s dangers and peacefully enjoyed San Salvador, Belmopan and Guatemala City, I did feel more edgy in Tegus. But Hotel Linda Vista changed all that. The front door is securely locked, rooms are safe and even better the nearby streets are safe to walk around but just don’t venture too far at night.

3. Fast Wifi

Another concern I had was of course over Wifi and internet use. However Tegus is the capital for a reason and Hotel Linda Vista offers fast free wifi in your room! It’s a small and cosy Guesthouse so signal is strong and fast. As a bonus my room (room 5) had a bloggers desk 😉

4. Pleasant Decor

You might think I’m getting older by mentioning the art and decor these days in places I stat but I’ve always loved hostels and hotels with a bit of colour and charm. Remember my time in Chili Blue Sydney or Limehouse Hostel Buenos Aires? The decor, atmosphere and ambience of the places we stay are a big factor in our overall enjoyment. I felt home here in this well designed guesthouse. A perfect place to relax.

5. Welcoming Staff

I was welcomed with a smile by Maria the owner. Not only was I at home and felt safe immediately but she gave me a map and lots of information. Maria also sorted me a taxi to the bus station and checked bus times for me ensuring an easy and swift passage into Nicaragua.

6. Decent Nights Sleep

I succumbed to an early night here in Hotel Linda Vista in Tegucigalpa. I’ll admit I was feeling a bit of travel burnout when I arrived in Tegucigalpa and the bed here allowed me a comfortable, long and decent sleep. Hotel Linda Vista is in a quiet neighbourhood so at night you couldn’t even hear beeping horns or traffic.

7. Breakfast is Included

Hotel Linda Vista is yet another place that serves up a decent breakfast included in the room price. Grapefruit juice and coffee (refillable!) with a generous bowl of fresh fruit followed by eggs, beans and tortillas.

8. Perfect Location

If the first 7reasons don’t convince then this will hopefully sway you. The location of Hotel Linda Vista is perfect. It is a 20minute enjoyable walk past a load of the main sights in Tegucigalpa and across the river to the Cathedral and main square.

What’s more is that there is a street of safe and swanky bars/ restaurants just a 5minute walk from the hotel and it’s only 10minutes from the long restaurant littered Boulevard. Plus as I mentioned it’s in a safe neighbourhood. You can basically walk to all the places you need from here. I didn’t need to use buses or taxis at all to see the city.
