My Home in the Mountains: Staying at Vista Linda Montana, Alajuela, Costa Rica

My gorgeous hotel in the mountains of Costa Rica – Vista Linda Montana.

My central American adventure was coming to an end and I knew it. I had two final nights in Costa Rica and having already explored San Jose, the capital, I decided to enjoy my final two nights in Central America by staying out in the mountains. I targeted the town of Alajuela as it just seemed a perfect fit – it’s close to the international airport (my flight out of Costa Rica was from there), it’s in the mountains and it’s also conveniently located near one of the best zoos in Central America (Zoo Aves). Then I stumbled upon a gem of a place that is actually outside the town of Alajuela, and with a spectacular mountain view. I discovered the Vista Linda Montana and I contacted Renate the owner and I was in luck – they had a spare room for me for my final two nights in Costa Rica! I was sorted and excited. My last two nights in the continent would be pure bliss!

It had been not just a Central American adventure I was on, I also backpacked through Brazil and the Guyana hat-trick just prior to that and had been back in Hong Kong and China after a crazy time in the Middle East. Life had no time to stop for me (and it still hasn’t). I kept on travelling, I kept on working and burn out was fast approaching. I knew it. So two nights of bliss in the mountains was the perfect way to end my time in this wonderful part of the world.

At University in Bournemouth, England I studied with Costa Rican lady Sigal Kahana. I always promised Sigal I’d visit her in San Jose and that I did. Sigal kindly agreed to give me a lift to the Hotel Vista Linda Montana and late afternoon I arrived to views of perfection. I loved my two nights of relaxation here and it really is a place to escape the floods of tourists and the traffic mayhem of San Jose (yet, an adorable capital). I chose the Hotel Vista Linda Montana for relaxation and these are the top 5 reasons why I loved it.

1. Views
The name doesn’t lie. Hotel Vista Linda Montana. A beautiful view of the mountains. Every night the sun went down to this, every morning I awoke to this view. Incredible.

2. Rooms
Pristine, cosy rooms. I had a room with a blogger’s desk, two comfortable chairs, a TV, a fan, an ensuite and nice decor. Each night when the sun sank, I’d lock my door and I was in for the night to relax. Admittedly I spent a lot of time on my laptop working though, which brings me onto reason 3.

My excellent room - it had colour, warmth and a balcony.

3. Wifi
Here in the mountains and on the edge of Alajuela, you may have thought the wifi wouldn’t be up to scratch, but it was! It was fast and always working in the rooms. A real bonus.

4. Breakfast
Breakfast here in the mountains comes in two parts – the fruit platter and the main. Freshly sliced fruit to get you started then eggs ham, cheese and bread all washed down with a coffee and a mountain view. Great way to start the day.

5. Tranquility
I won’t lie to you – I loved the tranquility of it. I was fed up with people for 2 nights and I needed time on my own! Yes, really. Here I found pure peace, even having an afternoon nap and a quick morning rest on my last day. The peace and tranquility here is perfect to cure that travel burnout.

As well as these five reasons, there are of course the activities and sights to do in and around the area, but I’ll write about that separately. If you’re heading to Costa Rica, and San Jose but you want to escape the big city buzz for a few nights, then the Hotel Vista Linda Montana is definitely the place to do that. Here are the details on booking it.
