Backpacking in Antarctica: Neptune’s Window, Deception Island

Backpacking in Antarctica: Neptune’s Window, Deception Island

It’s not the same sort of “window” we are used to, but this particular landmark was another of those amazing experiences on the world’s coldest continent Antarctica.

The walk from the main bay at Whaler’s Bay was cold and windy, but the air was so fresh. I walked with Russell, Rodrigo and Craig.

A seal was just lying there on the walk up. It was a wee bit windy at the time, and this would become even more evident as we walked up the small slope to Neptune’s Window.

This was the “window” itself. The wind would blow you away!! It was cold and windy, severe weather is the forte in Antarctica and Deception Island was no different.

Almost all of our shipmates came up to Neptune’s Window at some point to see it. Deception Island was a truly magical place.

With Joe and Lee on deck just before docking in Deception Island and walking to Neptune’s Window, amongst other places. We didn’t linger long at Neptune’s Window – not just the wind and cold weather, but the only chance to swim in Antarctica was up next so we walked back to where we docked for the “polar plunge” swim. More on that to come.
