Staying at City Hostel: The First Ever Hostel in Skopje, Northern Macedonia

I was completely buzzing during my stay in Skopje, Northern Macedonia. I really have to say – Skopje is a very under-rated city and so magnificent that it jumped up to be my second favourite city in all of Europe – second only to Belfast in Northern Ireland of course. I had arrived in Northern Macedonia from Bulgaria, choosing to get the bus from Sofia direct to Skopje. An easy capital city to capital city jaunt. I needed a base for my time in Skopje and I looked no further than the first ever hostel to open its doors here in Skopje, Northern Macedonia – City Hostel Skopje.

Before backpackers even ventured here, owner Bobi saw the gap in the market and opened the City Hostel. It’s a home away from home – a cosy base in a great location on a quiet street and it was where I wanted to stay when backpacking my way through Skopje.

After arriving from my border bus and a walk from the bus station I arrived to a warm welcome at the City Hostel. I was shown to my room given a map and then as a special treat the owner provided three of us with a hot meal that night – this isn’t actually the norm – it was a special treat that night but I certainly loved it! Here are 5 reasons why you should also stay at the City Hostel when you go backpacking in Skopje.

1. Location
The city hostel is perfect is you want to experience real life Skopje. Rather than being bang in the centre, you’re here in a quiet residential street, only 10 minutes walk from the city centre and a mere 1 minute walk from a Church, ATM, off Licence, Cafe and Restaurant.

It’s an ideal spot and if truth be told – a tad off the beaten track. I actually got chatting to some local people in the streets nearby, one time when I was lost, the other time they just stopped to chat.

It’s a great location to get your bearings in what is a fabulous city, on your walk to the city centre you also pass some local neighbourhood shops.

2. Warm Welcome
The first night I arrived I was welcomed by Stefan, the son of Bobi the owner. I was shown to my room, given a brief overview of the hostel and a map of the city – to make it easy to explore.

3. Fast Wi-Fi
Straight away I asked Stefan for the Wi-Fi password (it was on the wall!) and soon I was updating my Facebook page with some of my favourite photos of my journey from Bulgaria to Macedonia. I was surprised by the speed of the wi-fi – it worked in my bedroom.

4. Dorms and Privates
The City Hostel has the option of dorms or privates. You’ll probably know I’m a long term backpacker and this has meant more dorm room stays than you could imagine. It was nice now to have the choice and for once I went for a single room! Just me – I could get some peace to blog and a decent night’s sleep.

5. Breakfast
Coffee and tea is free all day and in the morning there is bread, butter and jam. It’s a shame more hostels in Europe don’t provide free breakfast as I really enjoyed this bonus aspect to my stay in the city hostel.
