Where to stay when backpacking in Georgetown Guyana – Rima Guesthouse

We were backpacking in Guyana recently and loved it. It’s quite an experience in fact and was completely different to what I expected. You might be wondering where to stay in Georgetown though as it isn’t exactly a “backpacker hub”. We based ourselves in the centrally located Rima Guesthouse and loved it. As well as touring Georgetown, Sloth Island, Parika and Bartica we also visited the awesome Kaieteur Falls. Here’s 5 reasons why you should stay at Rima Guesthouse.

1. Location
Rima Guesthouse is very centrally located in Georgetown. It’s on Middle Street. There is a bar opposite, a Cambio next door, plus it is close to all of these attractions and amenities, rough walking time in brackets:
– St. George’s Cathedral (10 mins)
– Tourist Information (5 mins)
– Dagron Tours (30 seconds)
– Fogartys (8 mins)
– City Hall (12 mins)
– Stabroek Market (16 mins)

2. Fast Wi-Fi
I was actually really shocked by the speed of the Wifi in Rima. It even worked fast in our bedroom which allowed me to keep my Facebook Page, Twitter and Blog up to date during my 5 days in Guyana.

3. Friendly Staff
Rima Guesthouse is run by a local family, who live here. They are very welcoming and friendly and it becomes your home. A cosy lounge is a great place to relax. We also caught some of the World Cup matches live here.

4. Safety and Security
Georgetown has a reputation for crime and it does have a dodgy side so you will be happy to know that Rima Guesthouse provides a safe haven and the staff also know where to and where not to go in the city.

5. Affordable
As backpackers we want value for money and Rima will not break your budget. A double room costs 35 US Dollars per night, so at $17.5 each it’s one of the best value hostels/guesthouses in the Guyanas.
