Today on my continued series on World Travellers it’s the turn of English girl Victoria Breewood. Flying a British union flag on her blog Pommie Travels, she’s a proud Brit, but as she discovered, there’s a wonderful big world out there beyond the confines of England…
Who are you?
I’m Victoria and I’m the owner of Pommie Travels.
Where are you from?
I’m from Manchester in the UK. More specifically, I’m from a town called Bury, but it’s easier to tell people I’m from Manchester when I’m on the road!
Where have you been?
I’ve travelled to 5 different continents, and have yet to make it to Antarctica or South America. To list them all, I’ve been to the USA, the Dominican Republic, England, Ireland, France, Monaco, Belgium, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia, Denmark, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Israel, Italy, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. Phew!
Where are you now?
I’m currently in Phuket, Thailand. I’m renting a place for a month and trying to get some work done! It’s nice to be able to relax for a while and have a place to hang my clothes.
What are the top 3 places you’ve visited?
Hmmm, that’s a tough one and totally not fair to make me choose! I’d have to say Israel, Myanmar and Portugal perhaps?
What is the best travel experience you’ve had?
There have been so many great travel experiences. I once won a video competition with World Nomads to film a 6-week road trip around South Australia. I got to do some incredible activities, such as swimming with sea lions, shark cage diving and taking a flight in a tiger moth.
What is the worst travel experience you’ve had?
The worst travel experience was definitely when I had a scooter accident in Bali. I came off the bike on gravel and ended up with some nasty injuries. I couldn’t walk properly for about a month, and the wounds kept getting infected. I still have the scars today.
What is the funniest travel experience you’ve had?
It’s difficult to think of anything that really springs to mind, I guess I’m not that funny! I once took part in a goat rodeo on a cattle station in Queensland, Australia. I had to run around a pen and catch a goat.
What is the scariest travel experience you’ve had?
The scooter accident was definitely the scariest travel experience, but I’ve also done a lot of fun adrenaline activities like flying in a tiger moth, abseiling down a crater and skydiving out of a plane.
What is the most random job you have had on your travels?
I’ve had a few failed jobs- I tried apple picking in New Zealand but only lasted one day. I was accepted for a job as a PA to fashion designer in Bali, but I soon realised it wasn’t the glamorous job I thought it was going to be! So I looked for another job and ended up editing event videos for a well-known sunset venue called Ku De Ta. In Portugal I handed out flyers for bars, and in Ios, Greece, I was literally paid to talk to guys, ensure people were having fun and keep them in the bar!
How do you fund your travels?
I fund my travels through a mixture of freelancing and advertising on my blogs. I often assist people with their WordPress blogs creating headers or helping them out with plugins etc. I also write for various online websites and do a bit of freelance copywriting.
