Hong Kong remains a firm favourite for me on my travels. It really has a lot offer in almost every department I look for – ease of movement, good base, fast Wi-Fi, huge range of foods, vibrant nightlife, mix of culture, night markets. It’s a country I’ll never tire of exploring. I’ve stayed in a few places in Hong Kong down the years including on Hong Kong Island, in Lam Tin, in Ma Wan and in Lai Chi Kok. But this week was my first time in four years to stay in Mong Kok. I headed to the excellent Dorsett Mong Kok Hotel for a night of pure charm and luxury as well as a day exploring the poky streets and markets of perpetually vibrant Mong Kok. Translations for you:
Hong Kong (Heung Gong) – Fragrant Harbour
Kowloon (Gow Lung) – Nine Dragons
Mong Kok (Wong Gok) – Busy Corner
The Dorsett Mong Kok is one of a chain of Dorsett branded hotels throughout Hong Kong and the rest of the world. We wanted to stay a night in Mong Kok, so this is the place we decided on and here are ten ace reasons why we loved our stay here.
1. Views
We opened the door of our room, number 2607 to be confronted by simply fantastic views of Kowloon and back towards the New Territories. It’s a city that lives up to its hype for sure.
2. Birthday Treats
On arrival into the room, I noticed a bottle of Chilean red wine, a birthday card and 2 teddy bears! TWO teddy bears. It was my girlfriend’s birthday weekend so she was thrilled to receive this almost VIP like treatment.
However the real charm was when we heard a knock on the door and received a birthday cake from the management. We simply can’t thank the management and staff enough for such a great surprise.
3. Smart Phone
On arrival at the check in desk I am informed about a Smart Phone in the room. This is a brand new feature of the hotel. The Smart Phone can be used to call a number of countries free of charge from the comfort of your hotel room. It’s more than just a phone though – it has WiFi and loads of other features!
4. Buffet Breakfast
There is a Thai style restaurant on the second floor offering a full buffet breakfast. The breakfast includes an enjoyable mix of Chinese, Thai and Western style breakfasts. Tea, coffee and juice is also included.
5. Free Shuttle Bus Service
Due to the fact that the Dorsett Mong Kok is in the Chinese traditional heartland here in Mong Kok – Tai Kok Tsui, the hotel provide an hourly regular bus service to drop you off to explore parts of the city for free. The bus leaves on the hour and stops at Mong Kok Langham and Tsim Sha Tsui Canton Road.
6. Twenty Four Hour Stay/24 Hour Stay
One special feature of the Dorsett Mong Kok is just brilliant. Due to the way flights come in and out of Hong Kong and it’s a 24 hour city, the Dorsett Mong Kok has therefore introduced 24-Hour Full Stay, which means a flexible check-in time with an entire 24-hour stay to match. What this means is that if a guest checks in at 8 pm, he/she can utilize the entire 24 hours and check out at 8 pm the next day! This exclusive offer is available to hotel official website bookers only and all room types, how’s that for a deal? It’s also the reason why we spent 24 hours in Mong Kok only and explored it as much as we could in this timeframe.
7. Air Conditioning
We were hot and sweaty when we arrived – it was a hot weekend in Hong Kong, so imagine the bliss on arrival into the cosy room to have air conditioning on.
8. Comfortable Beds, Clean Bathroom
I’ve stayed in enough dingy hostels down the years to know what a clean comfortable bed is like and here at the Dorsett Mong Kok, the room was so cosy. We actually didn’t want to leave!
9. WiFi Desk
Despite the fact that we only had 24 hours here, I still had some work to get done and my travel plans to prepare for my next adventures, so I had my own WiFi desk set up. WiFi was fast in our room.
10. Gym
There is a cool gym to use on the first floor. I personally didn’t use – we don’t always have time to, but this is an extra bonus in a hotel in this part of Hong Kong.
It was an enjoyable return to Mong Kok but it was over so fast. As I head of to Singapore and Bangladesh next, it was nice to have some luxury ahead of my next adventure. Thanks to the staff at the Dorsett Mong Kok for Panny’s birthday gifts and ensuring we enjoyed our stay here. Here are the contact details for booking your stay at the Dorsett Mong Kok:

Hi Warut, we had a normal double room with ensuite – perfect views. The hotel and I organised the birthday cake as a special treat for my girlfriend – she was so happy – I guess if you wanted that you would have to arrange it with them in advance like I did and tell them it’s your birthday. A perfect base to explore Mong Kok and Kowloon. Safe travels. Jonny
Hi, thanks for your blog. I plan to stay at Dorsett hotel too. Is it very far from Victoria Peak and you can bring the handset outside? Is it iphone or android phone? Any recommend restaurant near the hotel? Thank you!
Jacky recently posted…Da Paolo Gastronomia Again!
Hi Jacky, yes stay here. It’s far from the peak of course as it is in Kowloon and the peak is on Hong Kong Island. You can of course take the handset outside but that defeats the idea of it – it is a novelty handset for your room! I don’t remember the iPhone or Android and near the hotel are many different restaurants, I loved the markets and Chinese tea at Mong Kok. Safe travels. Jonny
