4 family-friendly activities you need to try this Spring

Spring is arguably the most beautiful time of year; the sun begins to appear more, and the snowdrops begin to bloom. With the change of season comes the opportunity to organise outdoor activities with your children, allowing them to learn new skills and encouraging them to explore the environment.

Hike in the Lake District

With the change in the weather now safer for your little ones, the lake district is the perfect location to be one with nature and experience new landscapes.

The area offers some of the most picturesque hiking trails in the UK. With crags, peaks, and lakes, it’s a great place to take the family for the day or a weekend.

Take the popular route from Braithwaite to Force Crag Mine route, for example; this 5-mile trek has a pub with a playground, toilets, and a visitors’ centre where you can get information regarding the route. All these additions mean the hike is highly manageable if you all don a sturdy pair of walking boots. You’ll get the views you’d expect from the Lake District without having to climb any steep peaks.

Go on a bike ride

Riding a bike is an excellent skill for kids to learn and is also a great form of exercise.

Cycling in winter can be daunting; it gets dark early, the roads are busy, and ice can make it very unsafe. As we get closer to summer, the conditions get safer, and the evenings become much lighter. However, we’d still recommend an adult supervise any trips away from home.

Cycling UK offers excellent advice for anyone looking to get into cycling and has made it easy to find local routes to take.

Plant a Crop Garden

Most children are unaware of where their food comes from or how much effort it takes to produce it. March is a great month to change this, by planting a wide range of crops at home or at a local allotment. Gardening teaches children many vital skills in a rewarding manner. They learn patience, responsibility, and independence, among other great skills.

It might even encourage kids to eat their vegetables if they’ve raised them from seed to crop.

Go on a City Break

We often find ourselves falling into the same routine when staying in the same places for too long, so spring is the perfect time to visit somewhere new.

Lots of cities in the UK have beautiful natural landscapes surrounding them. Newcastle for example has an idyllic coastline that is perfect for relaxing walks and sensory playtime for children.

Spring is the perfect time to visit if you have a dog as the most popular beaches along the northeast coast don’t allow dogs during the summer months. During late spring you can balance the nice weather with the ability to bring your dog on the beach, just make sure to bring a wetsuit if you’re planning on joining them in the water!
