Taking photos while travelling is difficult because you need to tow the line between living in the moment and enjoying your time, and also making sure you get some awesome photos so that you can immortalize your travels for life. There are ways you can do both, depending on where you are and how you’re approaching your photo acquisition. Here are some tips for getting the best photos while travelling.

Plan Your Shots

Research your destination beforehand, identify the must-visit places and what they are known for. Visualize the shots you want to take and plan your itinerary accordingly. There are some iconic shot locations out there. Think about the Christ the Redeemer statue, Eiffel Tower lit up at night, Statue of Liberty, etc. If you plan your shots you can work out when the best time to take them would be. 

Know Your Gear

Familiarize yourself with your camera or smartphone. Learn how to adjust settings like ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. Make sure you have extra batteries and memory cards on hand. Remember, you need to be careful here too. You don’t want to have to be lugging around all of this equipment when you just want to naturally explore the location. Also, it could pose a security risk. Instead, keep it for the photo, then take it back to the hotel or wherever you’re staying so you can explore freely again.

Capture The Details

Details can be just as important as the bigger picture. Take close-up shots of unique textures, patterns, and objects that you find interesting. They can make for great additions to your photo album. You don’t just need those shots of the iconic, the little things are what make up the bulk of your trip, afterall.

Shoot during the golden hour: The golden hour, the hour after sunrise or before sunset, provides the most beautiful and warm natural light that can make your photos look breathtaking. Make the most of this time to take some of your best shots. There may be variations on this hour, depending where you go. Also, your itinerary and travel plans may not allow for it so you’ll have to try and work out whens best to take the picture aside from the golden hour shot.

Capture People Too

People are a big part of the places we visit. Don’t be shy to ask locals for permission to take their photos, and make sure to capture candid moments too. You’ll meet a lot of people when you’re traveling and its important to make sure they form part of your photo albums afterwards. Faces lend memory reality, and pictures of people will help you jump right back into the memory.

Shot Variety Is Important

Take a variety of shots: Take both wide and close-up shots, take photos in different lighting conditions, and experiment with different camera settings to get a range of shots. These differences will add a good dynamic to your photo albums afterwards. If its the same type of picture in every location, it won’t be very varied. By doing different things you won’t get bored of your photography and you’ll be able to showcase your range too.

Edit Your Photos

It’s important to edit your photos too. After taking your photos, take the time to edit them. You can use photo editing software or apps to enhance your photos, adjust the exposure, color, or contrast, and crop your shots to your liking. You might not want to do this if you’re a purist, but at the same time, if you want to make them look as good as possible, you’re doing to want to edit them afterwards.
