The Best On-The-Go Airport Snacks
When you’re on the move, grabbing whatever is tasty and easily available to eat is a pretty common practice. While this is okay from time to time, it can become a seriously unhealthy habit for frequent travellers.
However, avoiding the convenience and allure of airport snacks and restaurants will take a little bit of thought and planning. Here, we’ll take a look at seven easy, healthy, and delicious snacks you can pack into your carry-on luggage to nourish your body while you wait for your flight.
Trail Mix
Good old trail mix is a great option for mindless snacking – those moments when you just need something to do with your hands!
Make your own version by mixing together some of your favourite nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. These ingredients are full of healthy fats and fibre and will keep you satisfied for ages. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t shy away from mixing in a small handful of your favourite sweet treats, too – Dots candy is a great addition to the salty goodness of the nuts.
Protein Bars
By now, we’ve all learned the importance of the role of protein in a healthy diet and weight management. However, showing up to the airport with a grilled chicken breast in your luggage isn’t exactly the ideal snack pack.
Fortunately, protein bars are a much more convenient (and appealing) option if you’re looking for a satiating snack. They come in loads of different flavours, and you can often find brands that create healthy and low-sugar options!
Fresh or Dried Fruit
Fruit is incredibly healthy, packed with fibre, essential vitamins and minerals, and delicious natural sugars that will give us the energy boost we need for a boring flight.
Opt for easy-to-eat fruits like apples, bananas, or grapes that are portable and not too messy to eat. You can also snack on a packet of dried fruit, but mind your portion size as this option can rack up pretty high in calories and excessive sugar!
Popcorn
Air-popped popcorn is a low-fat, light, and salty snack that’s easy and fun to eat as you wait for your flight.
Popcorn is also a great source of fibre and will help you stay full until you can have your next proper meal. However, be mindful of your sodium intake and try to opt for alternative seasonings instead of oversalting your snack.
Yoghurt Cups
When you’re on the move, individual yoghurt cups (like the ones you buy for your kids) make a handy and wholesome snack, especially if you have a cooler bag on hand.
Try to opt for Greek yoghurt for a higher protein option, and make your snack more interesting by adding nuts, granola, fruit, or even some jam for a sweet burst.
Veggies and Hummus
Finally, packing a portion of creamy hummus and a small jar of chopped veggies is another wonderful and healthy airport snack idea.
You can use veg like bell peppers, carrots, or celery, which have a great crunch and minimal calories. The hummus is packed with healthy fats that will keep you full and satisfied, and makes an overall delicious treat.
