Staying at the Dor de Bucovina Hostel in Campulung Moldovenesc, Romania

I hadn’t even heard of Campulung Moldovenesc, or Bucovina a week before I headed to Romania, but suddenly I would never forget either place as I arrived with an eager backpack and a working laptop. OK so the laptop broke after 5 days in Romania but my backpack was still as eager for adventure as ever, and so I headed on a train journey from Bucharest up to Campulung Moldovenesc.

Having stayed in a Pura Vida hostel in Bucharest (the Little Bucharest Hostel), I decided to stay loyal to the best hostel brand in Romania and booked into the Dor de Bucovina in the town of Campulung Moldovenesc. Campulung Moldovenesc is a quiet town and the hostel is situated about 35-40 minutes walk from the main train station. You can get a taxi out there if you wish, but I enjoyed the walk. This hostel is yet another one I will remember as it was just so cosy. Romania gets cold in late Autumn and Winter, yet the hostel was warm. Here are 5 top reasons to stay at the Dor de Bucovina.

1. Warmth and Cosiness
I arrived at night and it was cold outside, but once I stepped into my room, I was filled with warmth. This is actually not something I worry about, but here it felt really nice. Like a warm cosy, enclave keeping out the imminent snow and ice outside (yes so I was there before it got too cold but you get the idea).

Warm radiators in the rooms, hot water and just a feeling of warmth make you feel at home.

2. Local Food
Romanian cuisine is diverse and different. I tried a few local meals in Bucharest but here in Dor de Bucovina, the staff all know how to cook authentic local dishes.

Breakfast will be included but you can pay extra for a dinner too. Hot water is readily available too so if you bring your own tea and coffee you’re sorted. The food is excellent and they have Romanian specialities such as Sarmale and Mamaliga.

3. Welcoming Owner
Dor de Bucovina is run by a local lady called Gabriella, who happens to be the mother of Tudor, who runs the Pura Vida hostels group. From the moment I stepped in the door I was made to feel welcome.

4. Wi-Fi
The wi-fi works in the lounge and communal areas and the signal stretches into some of the rooms if you really need it – ask for a room with wi-fi.

5. Tours of the Region
The Southern Bucovina region is simply beautiful. Not only are the countryside roads a pure Romanian rural gem to drive along, but the nearby monasteries are a UNESCO listed world heritage site. The only real negative aspect about this place is the slight distance from the train station, but for a seasoned backpacker I enjoyed the walk, and for those who don’t feel like it, simply hop into a taxi! Here are a few more photos from mt stay.
