There was a lot of music created in the 80s and 90s, such as HipHop and Grunge. Each genre of music had its unique dress code, which led to significant developments in fashion, including the grunge look. You might have read some of my music stories down the years. I wrote about my favourite traveller’s tunes, the top music sights to backpack in London and the Blur rock gig in the Kong in 2015.
The grunge look was particularly famous in the late 80s and 90s, with plenty of celebrities wearing clothes in grunge style. Famous entertainers who rocked the grunge look include Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.
Grunge fashion faded from the mid to late 90s, but it has recently become popular again. The following is a guide on how you can subtly pull off the grunge look:
Grunge Hair
The first element of the grunge look we will look at is the hair. The grunge look was fantastic because it allowed you to rock peculiar hairstyles at any time of the year.
You can subtly pull off the grunge hair because it does not require any special attention. The best part about grunge hair is that you can save money by using cheap dips dyes to change your hair color. You need little water, meaning you can maintain the look while traveling.
The aim of grunge hair is to have ‘comfortable bed hair,’ which you can modify to suit whatever look you want. If you’re feeling courageous and want to experiment with hairstyles, an undercut is a fantastic idea.
Grunge Shoes
From the head to the feet, that is what the grunge look is about for most people. Grunge footwear is a great place to start if you are not quite sure about the grunge look.
Grunge footwear can be divided mainly into four categories: boots, canvas trainers, creepers, and sandals. You can buy them anywhere, but it would be better to get them from a grunge shoe designer like designer outerwear by Alexander Mcqueen for men.
You can wear grunge shoes with just about anything to infuse the outfit with some grunge style.
Grunge Makeup
The grunge look gives you plenty of freedom when it comes to applying makeup. You can also use as much makeup as you want.
The point of grunge makeup, as well as the look, is to make a statement. You will use darker color shades for grunge makeup but try to keep it simple.
A good example is to use thick eyebrows and apply dark-colored lipstick. However, you should probably avoid black as most people overdo it.
Grunge Pants
When it comes to pants, ripped jeans are the epitome of the grunge look. However, you can also wear baggy, fitted cargo pants and still achieve the same look.
In the 90s, the plain black cargo pants were the favorite pants for grunge enthusiasts. If the pants are loosely fitted, you can hardly go wrong in achieving the grunge look.
Grunge Shirts
As it pertains to shirts, a grunge look will hardly be complete without a flannel button-up shirt. You will wear a loose shirt and button it around the waist. However, you should be wary about the weather if you are going to wear a flannel shirt.
You will find flannel shirts in just about every mall nowadays, so it should not be hard to find one. The flannel shirt look is not only easy to pull off, but it also looks pretty good.
Grunge Crop Tops
The most recent fashion statement made by the grunge look is wearing crop tops. Crop tops are for females, and they are all the rage right now.
If you can don a crop top with a loose biker jacket alongside ripped denim, then you have an almost complete grunge look. Grunge crop tops look tremendous and are excellent for a grunge look if you have the stomach for them.
To conclude, the grunge look is coming back strongly, but it is not for everyone. If you have the above elements, you should be able to pull off the grunge look. Feel free to experiment as you should have fun with the look because that is the point.
