“There is no rule on how to write. Sometimes it comes easily and perfectly; sometimes it’s like drilling rock and then blasting it out with charges” – Ernest Hemingway.
Curaçao was an unexpected oddball bonus for me. I wasn’t really supposed to be here! But by way of four cancelled flights on my 2022 – 2023 Caribbean adventure, as a bonus I got to rank in a new country, Curaçao🔵🍊🇨🇼. I’d be resting my head in the capital city Willemstad after an inspired night on the rip down the coast at Mambo Beach. There at Mambo Beach I’d write poetry in the Famous Hemingway Bar and pub crawl the main drag. And I actually drank Blue Curaçao🔵🍊🇨🇼 in Curaçao!
Sleepwise I was in bed D in room 108 of the Bikes And Beds Hostel. Or Bed and Bike Hostel in Willemstad, the capital city of Curacao. It’s a pretty cool looking hostel which also randomly fitted with my colour coded for this trip – orange, white and blue!! Bed And Bike have TWO hostels in Curacao – I stayed at Bed and Bike Pietermaai which is in the heart of the capital city – Willemstad. They also have a location at Jan Thiel.
This was a quick night for me in what is often voted the best hostel in The Caribbean. Of course opinions are relative and I have stayed in many better ones in the region, but it’s definitely a cool and cheap hangout when backpacking in Willemstad. On arrival, my immigration card was accepted and I was suddenly stamped into country 211 – Curaçao.
I liked how Curaçao has its own currency and the legacy of the Gilder lives on here. My first ever backpacking adventure without my parents was in 1991 to The Netherlands and that was when I found a love of travel, with its strange currencies, other cultures, flags, languages etc. I despise the Euro currency and sorely miss spending Punts in Dublin, Pesetas in Spain, Francs in France, Escudos in Portugal, Lats in Latvia, Deutsch Marks in Germany, Lira in Italy and Gilders in The Netherlands. The Euro currency destroyed a lot of that travel love for me.
“You know with love comes strange currencies” – R.E.M.
This is just a quick review of the hostel as one of my desires is to one day have a review post/article of EVERY single place I have slept and make a blog post with a list of it all! The kitchen was modern and clean.
The bathrooms also were clean and cosy.
There is a cool bar and indeed I pub crawled in Curacao despite only having one night in this country!
My bed was like a pod (designed well to save space) in a cosy dorm room.
I didn’t have much time to meet my dorm mates or hostel mates but it was a pleasant one night only stay here. At the Bikes And Beds Hostel in Pietermaai. In Willemstad. In Curaçao.
