Thirsty Thursdays: Watching Kennedy Star Live At Bar Caupa Bangou, Niamey, Niger

Well on our last night backpacking in Niamey, Niger, we were served up a treat – local live music – guitars, drums, singing live in front of our eyes with cold beers to boot. It was the final night of a wild adventure which started on a bus from Olsztyn to Kolobrzeg in Poland on 9th November 2024. First of all, to set the scene – the Niger Visa is NOT an easy one to nab. Currently, the UK, Irish and Polish governments all advise us NOT to travel to Niger. That in itself, was the spur and catalyst to make us want to go there and prove them all wrong, as usual. So, we headed to Berlin, TWICE to get the Niger Visa in Berlin, Germany.

Arrival in Niamey, Niger at night

Now that we had the visa, we headed to Niger on a direct flight from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on Boxing Day. On arrival we headed straight to our superb hotel, the Hotel Univers 3 Aeroport Luxe in Niamey, the capital city of Niger!

Backpacking In Niger 🇳🇪: My Stay At Hotel Univers 3 Aeroport Luxe, Niamey

While staying here, we were able to relax by the pool, chill out, drink local beers and dine in the restaurant. We also toured the sights of Niamey. We did waste a bit of time solving a passport dilemma. I wasn’t too fussed about it but Marek got stressed because the police keep your passports in Niger. I knew it was standard procedure and no cause for alarm. We ended up visiting this “DST Office” twice to try and locate and source our passports, but in the end the passports were simply being held at the international airport in Niamey because we were coming in and out of the airport. Marek met a local lad called Illiassou by chance in our hotel and he was the one we spent an afternoon with at DST loyal and trying to solve the passport issue. He even went to the airport with us, but turned down the offer of drinks and dinner as a devout Muslim. Otherwise, we would have drinkpacked another local restaurant before the Kennedy Star night out! Thanks to Illiassou.

With local lad Illiassou who solved the passport issue

Once all that had been sorted, we were finally relaxed and up for a night out in Niamey, one of my top 17 memories from backpacking Niger. Thanks to Augustine in the Hotel Univers 3 Aeroport Luxe, we were invited to a local music night in a bar called Bar Caupa Bangou. But Augustine left early on his own and it was now dark. We tried in vain to get a taxi and time was ticking, it was now about 20:30 on our last night in Niger, but we didn’t want to miss the live music. The streets are barely lit at night here in Niamey and we had no mission to find this bar on our own, so we finally found a taxi and our hotel reception manager was able to tell the taxi driver exactly where Bar Caupa Bangou was located and he knew it. Sorted. Or not…

Driving at Night In Niamey Just Before Almost Being Hijacked

The traffic was nuts, pure madness. None of the windows in our taxi went up, the door had no lock and suddenly in amongst the traffic it started to feel tense, like other cars full of locals were staring at Marek and I. With the darkness gaping in, one lad started shouting at me and then to my shock, the door burst open and he got in beside me in anger. It was nuts. It all happened so fast. About five of his mates were behind him and he started asking Marek and I if we were American and why we were here. He asked us in French of course and I understand only a bit. He was aggressive, I had no idea if he would have a knife or a gun or if they were going to attack us and hijack us or ambush us. Even our taxi driver looked scared. Marek was in the front seat and stayed calm. I chatted to this guy in a traffic jam in the blackness darkness and told him we are Irish and Polish tourists. NOT Americans and we love Niger and Niamey. We love your country, we are here to see it. It took a while for this to cool the situation down and his aggression wore off. Finally after five minutes or so (I don’t remember), the lad finally got out of the car. It was all a mad frenzy and we saw him board a truck which I then thought was following us, but the traffic wasn’t move. It was dark and slow. Finally we came to a clearing and a break in traffic and I gazed back and it looked like they had gone. I’ll never know their motive or how I sweet-talked myself out of a hijacking, but within minutes we were inside Bar Caupa Bangou and I had an ice cold Libs Sorgho in my hand.

First Libs Sorgho Beer at Bar Caupa Bangou

Marek and I found Augustine in there at the back and sat down beside him. Marek and I were the only two Caucasian or white people in sight, not just that night and that day but for the whole time we were in Niger, apart from the Italian Priest we met at the Catholic Cathedral. Long story shortened and over, we were now safely in this bar to enjoy the night and the beers went down well!

The music pumps out a beat and we see some ladies dressed elegantly in white and red. I asked Augustine if they are the dancers or the next band on. But I was shocked to learn they were all prostitutes sitting in line in the bar, waiting to be picked by the next local lad! Marek and I popped into the bar area briefly to check them out and what it was all about. There was one other non-Niger lad in there – he was a well-known Turkish businessman we were told.

Everyone was on the drink and we are then told that this bar is open 24/7. The party never stops. Niger Away was nuts and this was our last night here, but we had no intention of staying the whole night. Although our flight out the next day was late afternoon, so we actually could have done. We drank and chatted with the local music pumping ahead of the band getting ready to start.

After a few hours of pumping music, good chat and vibes and more cold beers, we get to meet the lead singer of Kennedy Star!

How I Got Oasis🎸🎙️⚫⚪Tickets In 2024 For Dublin🇮🇪On The Reunion Tour: Loyal Fans

“It’s maybe the fame, it’s forgotten your name” – Noel Gallagher.

The amount of fake news in the media the last few months or so about Oasis and their ticket sales has been laughable for most of us hardcore, real, genuine fans! Oasis ran undoubtedly one of the fairest systems imaginable for such a reunion! Loyal fans were given priority! I got my tickets of course and so did my mates that were there in the 1990s and the reason is simple – Oasis, the band, their media team are aware who their loyal hardcore fans are!

They know who we are as they have an extensive database, a database that I joined in 1994!

Yes, loyal fans joined the Oasis database in 1994. I bet these bandwagon jumpers and media gimps didn’t know that! Here are the six obvious reasons why all real Oasis fans were given priority…

“We know just what we are” – Noel Gallagher.

How I Got Oasis🎸🎙️⚫⚪Tickets In 2024 For Dublin🇮🇪On The Reunion Tour: Loyal Fans

1.I Joined The Oasis Fanclub in 1994

I first joined the Oasis fanclub in 1994 by posting the white postcard inside the sleeve of the Cigarettes And Alcohol single. Millions of us joined that – millions! Oasis debut album Definitely Maybe was the fastest selling debut album in the UK.

We all joined the Oasis Mailing list by posting this in the mid-1990s
We all joined the Oasis Mailing list by posting this in the mid-1990s

For many like me, we posted the above postcard in the 1990s and joined the mailing list and fanclub, I was even sent the copy of the first ever official Oasis fanclub magazine in 1996, a second issue was never even produced! Here was the postal address –

United Kingdom

By the end of the 1990s, Oasis had posted me about 15 postcards or envelopes advertising new singles, CDs, DVDs, gigs and merchandise.

2.I bought every official Oasis album on single, and the mailing list will know it for the limited edition releases.

As well as being on the Oasis mailing list, Oasis will know I bought loads of their singles in the 1990s, some had to be ordered by posting a postcard back (Be Here Now, for example). I was there then.

Oasis – Be Here Now

3.I have been to 14 Oasis gigs and Oasis Mailing List know that!

As well as being on the Oasis mailing list, Oasis will know I went to a load of Oasis concerts – I used my real name to order all those tickets, some of them through the mailing list clicks once it became an emailing list (around SOTSOG time in 2000).

My ticket for Oasis in 1997 at the Point in Dublin

4.I have ordered over 10 different Oasis Mailing List CD/DVD/Vinyls

I have many of the limited edition box sets, DVDs, CDs and vinyls, all ordered through the fanc club and mailing list. There will be a record of that on their system. I don’t imagine many people have the fan club only magazine, DVD boxes of Don’t Believe The Truth or Heathen Chemistry.

Some of my tickets for Oasis concerts 1996 – 2008

5.I have ordered official merchandise from Oasis since the 1990s

I’ve also ordered fleeces, t-shirts and other Oasis items from the mailing list in the last 30 years.

6.Even after Oasis split, I still bought re-issues such as Knebworth and Definitely Maybe

Again these orders were done through the exact same username and mailinglist from 1994. I ordered Knebworth in 2021 when it was released.

That email gave me exclusive priority access to buy Oasis tickets a night before the newer, less hardcore fans. Stop gurnin yer bake out.

Two of them were at The Odyssey Arena in June 2002, the third one was also in 2002 and was at Prehen Playing Fields in Derry/Doire/Londonderry. Tickets for this one were £29 plus I think a £1.50 booking fee, a decent price back then to watch Oasis.

“Born on a different cloud from the ones that have passed round town” – Liam Gallagher.

It was just my workmate Darren Latimer and I at the Prehen concert in Derry/Londonderry. It was an odd choice of venue for Oasis but Derry was loving it that weekend. I drove us up early Saturday morning and we stayed in the Waterfoot Hotel. The Waterfoot was a class hotel, a location on the river, with a great bar and restaurant and even a swimming pool. We only stayed one night here but we arrived early, drank in our hotel room and certainly had a wild 24 hours in Derry/Londonderry that time.

“You fall in, you fall down; there’s no love in your shotgun town” – Noel Gallagher.

The day was decent banter as we met a load of lads in the bars, drank the carryout in our hotel room, watched football and then the girls at Cafe Rock after the concert. Darren Latimer and I had some mental days but I am sure some more photos from the actual concert exist, I just can’t find them now. I actually thought Ocean Colour Scene were decent too and this was well organised. Daz and I were on the rip quite a bit back then. We had Nokia phones by 2002 but not camera phones, smart phones, WiFi, social media or the like. The 2 photos here were on an old 24+3 disposable camera. The ticket photos I took today when I found the tickets.

Nothing was done online, nobody had the internet, nobody had any type of mobile phone at all, never mind a “smartphone”. Oasis massive “Be Here Now” tour ticket sales were done face to face in record stores all over the UK and Ireland. All over the UK, people would stay all night on the street in an orderly queue outside the record shops, waiting for it to open the next morning. Some kids these days don’t know they’re born…

Officially, there was a phone number for tickets over the phone, but there was less trust with that, plus nobody had a phone. I was 17 back then so I didn’t have a phone or a mobile phone, or a credit card or even a bank card! We all paid cash in hand back then. It was pay in cash only in the record shops, or by cheque.

How I Got Oasis🎸🎙️⚫⚪Tickets In 1997 For Dublin🇮🇪On The Be Here Now Tour

The night before the Be Here Now tour tickets went on sale, we stayed up all night and queued outside the shop. We headed with food and drink to a shopping centre/mall called The Flagship Centre in Bangor before midnight. As an exception, they kept it open for us that night to queue all night for Oasis tickets.

How I Got Oasis🎸🎙️⚫⚪Tickets In 1997 For Dublin🇮🇪On The Be Here Now Tour

A few lads brought guitars and footballs and we monitored the queue ourselves. We sang, played guitar, chatted, kicked football, drank beer through the night. There was a fairness about it – first come first served. It was maximum 2 tickets per person. We waited there all night for a shop called MTM (More Than Music) to open at 8 a.m. They had 100 tickets for each of the two gigs. That was it.

Watching Oasis🎸🎙️⚫⚪In 1997 In Dublin🇮🇪On The Be Here Now Tour

As soon as the record shop opened at 8 a.m. it was first come first served up to the counter. I was about 50th in the queue. A load of my mates got the Friday night, it went first, by the time it got to me, I got the Thursday night. By 8.20 a.m. all the tickets were gone and those who were still arriving – tough luck, we had stayed up all night and deserved that. The euphoria was massive!

No internet, no Wi-Fi, no smartphones, no videos. Then the concert day came and it was mental – my mate Begzi and I had a disposable camera of 24 photos and we took 12 each with it – we headed on a bus from Bangor in Northern Ireland to Dublin in Republic of Ireland. There was a stop in Belfast to fill the bus, then a stop in Dundalk for lunch and beers. Glory days loyal.

This was a nuts weekend watching Oasis on the Heathen Chemistry tour back in July 2002. My mate from Bangor Gavin Moore and I flew into Luton from Belfast and did the first two nights. I found my ticket for the Saturday night one, it’s a green ticket. I think the Thursday night was a red colour ticket and the Sunday night was yellow and was announced late as the first two nights sold out fast.

We stayed in Finsbury Park itself, in a guest house within walking distance of the gig. I have no idea of the name of that guest house, I even Googled for it and still couldn’t remember. We booked it over the phone using landlines in 2002. After we checked in, it was straight out to the bars pre-gig – the bars around there were all nuts.

Twenty two years later, here today in 2024 I just secured tickets for the Oasis reunion tour in 2025. It’s going to be the nuts! I haven’t changed that much! I still take my Northern Ireland flag, because only bigots find this Irish flag sectarian. We were drinking with people from everywhere that weekend and nobody cared about anything. We were all Oasis and we were all mad for it. I dream of one day this peace lives everywhere.
Crazy wild times and good to have Oasis back.

Backpacking in New Zealand🇳🇿: My Night As Chief At Tū Te Ihi, Tamaki Maori Village

Long overdue then this one! Seventeen years ago this week I was backpacking in the North Island of New Zealand. Across a brace of trips to New Zealand, I have backpacked the North Island and the South Island but not yet Stewart Island. I ended up in Rotorua where I have backpacked through twice. I stayed at Crash Palace Backpackers in the days when I was only a hobby blogger, so I never reviewed it. While based there, I roomed with Andy and Ali from England who were going to the Maori Village night for the Tū Te Ihi night at Tamaki.

Organising a Tū Te Ihi night at Tamaki

It’s easy to backpack in New Zealand. Hostels have all these tours and make it so easy to sort. I’d almost argue that New Zealand is the easiest country in the world to backpack in. I booked my ticket through the Crash Palace Backpackers Hostel in Rotorua.

Backpacking in Rotorua Crash Palace Backpackers

I was placed in the WEKA bus group to be picked up by a driver called Eden around 5 p.m. I was backpacking with Andy and Ali and the WEKA was actually a big bus with about 20 other backpackers on it. I got a yellow ticket.

What Is Tū Te Ihi? (Winter Matariki Celebration)

“Tū Te Ihi” evokes the energy and passion inspired by the Matariki star cluster and the promise they symbolize. Matariki brings to mind the ancestors of the Tamaki Maori tribe, prompting the familes (and us tourists) to remember their legacy and reflect on the past year.

Backpacking in New Zealand🇳🇿: My Night At Tū Te Ihi, Tamaki Maori Village

Tū Te Ihi 2024 is held in an 1800s Aotearoa setting, in a small pā (village) called Te Pā Tū, Tamaki, located just south of Rotorua. The ihi—passion, energy, and sense of celebration—is palpable.

The evening came in 6 parts:

1.Bus journey there.
2.Arrival at Tamaki and Greeting with Fire Ceremony.
3.Video introduction to Tū Te Ihi.
4.Hangi Food / Kai Horotai Dinner.
5.Dancing and Music Event.
6.Presentation and Goodbyes.
7.Bus journey home.

The bus trip there

Back in 2007, I didn’t even travel with ANY mobile phone at all and have only these photos from an old digital camera. On the bus there we each had to sing a song and tell a joke. I didn’t know they were using that to decide on a prize of a tribe chief (leader). I was surprised then, that I was chosen as the chief of my tribe! This meant I had to go up at the start and end to be greeted to the village.

Then we had the opening ceremony and welcome through a white wooden door. This include dancing, the Haka, music and quite a performance!

Up next we are taken to a hut style room which has a big screen and we watch a presentation which is in English.

Then it’s dinner time and we eat Hangi food which was prepared partly under the ground in the soil, and partly on the barbecue.

The dinner was excellent. The vegetables had been steam cooked underground – potato, carrot and turnip. There were three meats – I think it was chicken, pork and beef with gravy. And a side salad. Water was included but I bought a beer also.

Pudding was a chocolate style cake with custard. I’m really not sure how Maori that one actually is, but I devoured it!

After the dinner, I had a craft beer (MATA) and was called up as chief of my tribe to accept a gift. I was delighted to get a souvenir necklace which I still cherish to this day.

Then we enjoyed the rest of the music and beer before Andy, Ali, myself and our Weka Bus headed in the darkness back to Rotorua.

I did actually make a few videos of this evening including the dancing and the dinner but they have probably been lost down the years.

Visiting The Birthplace Of Iron Maiden: Cart And Horses, London, England

I wrote about some musical backpacking sights of London before. On that trip I backpacked Pulp, Oasis, The Clash, The Beatles and Iron Maiden. Sadly the day I visited Iron Maiden, the pub of their birthplace, was shut for renovation. I was there on 1st January 2020, just before the world was thrown intill chaos with the coronavirus pandemic.

Then in 2023, again when backpacking 🎒 in London, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇬🇧, I also visited The Cart And Horses Pub, The birthplace of heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It’s at Maryland on The Elizabeth 🟣 Tube Line.

Getting to The Cart And Horses, Maryland, London

You can either go to Maryland or West Ham train station – both are okay and walkable. I have actually done it both ways, use your Oyster Card (standard in London) and you can try the purple Elizabeth Line which opened not long before Queen Elizabeth II died.

Turn left out of Maryland station and keep walking and you can’t miss it – The Cart And Horses sits on a prominent corner.

Pints At The Cart And Horse, London, England

This time it was open although we only had time for two quick beers, even though we wanted a bite. The reason was we had booked a train to Birmingham that night and had to rush back to Euston. Rafal Kowalczyk, my best friend and a huge Iron Maiden was delighted that the bar was open this time. Here are a few photos from the trip.

We just opted for the cheapest beer on tap and chilled out for about an hour or so. It was good to finally tick this one off.
