Another Chinese gem of a snack for you today on Friday’s Featured Food. As I head back to the marvellous Yunnan Province to the peculiar but vibrant old town of Jianshui. Jianshui is off the beaten track for sure, but its inner charms will surprise you to the core. After backpacking my way through the old streets, to the gardens, gate and temples, it was time for a lunchtime snack.
From a tip off by the lady at our hostel (the Linan Inn) we were told about an excellent local restaurant which specialised in the spicy barbecued tofu. It was in the old town near a small square. So in we went. We sat at the front, right in front of the barbecue to get the proper experience.
I ordered a beer (5 RMB) in the meantime and the lady running the barbecue was busy adding more tofu and turning the tofu over. It cooks really quickly. Soon we had been given two mini dishes of spices – they were really spicy! Then the tofu was ready.
It was hot, it was spicy, it was tasty and I loved it. Yes I’m not usually a big fan of Chinese food, but I gloss over the shit meals on here, hence why Friday’s Featured Food is normally something I enjoyed. The best thing about it was the price – including the beer, the bill was only 20 RMB, so around £2 for 2 people!
I wrote about stinky tofu before, which I tried in Hong Kong and Taiwan, but I must say now that the spicy barbecued tofu in Yunnan Province tops the list. I thoroughly recommend it and Jianshui is a town famous for it.

A video of the Spicy Barbecued Tofu in Jianshui, Yunnan Province, China:
5 RMB for a beer sounds like a good deal to me, I’m used to 45-50 RMB in Shanghai (well it is Shanghai).
Spicy and barbecue. Sounds like a good idea and makes tofu a lot more exciting.

Thanks for your comment!! But 45-50 RMB ouch!! I have travelled a lot in China and beers are always less than 10 RMB for takeaway and restaurants in the places where I go. Has to be in bars/pubs and “western style” places at that price surely?? Get out into the sticks and see rural China you will love it!! Safe travels, Jonny
