This week I’ve been travelling in Belize and one of the things I really wanted to do is prove there is so much more to see here than beaches and snorkelling. After an awesome few days in Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye (San Pedro), I decided to hit up the capital city of Belize. You might not know that the capital is Belmopan!
I searched online and found a cool hotel there called El Rey Hotel so I booked in for a couple of nights here to enjoy the capital city and do some tours to sites such as Xunantunich and Actun Tunichil Muknal (I’ll write more about them soon!). Belmopan had a few surprises in store including what is easily the best cheesecake I’ve had for a long time! In fact the only other cheesecake that comes close was the Brunei Cheesecake I tried in Bandar Seri Begawan.
The El Rey Hotel also has a cafe and restaurant under the brand of Delicious Designs which has a speciality – cheesecake and coffee. After a day exploring the caves, swimming and hitch hiking, it was late afternoon coffee time and Jennie from the Hotel went to prepare the coffee and cheesecake.
Then came the huge surprise. I’m a big coffee fan and perhaps I don’t write about it enough (well except my Cafe Crawl in East Timor (!), my favourite local coffee shop in Northern Ireland and that crazy luwak coffee in Indonesia) but here they have a range of coffees and some of the finest in the world. I rolled my eyes in delight at seeing Ethiopian coffee on the list so it had to be one (memories of my time backpacking in Harar on zero sleep came to mind).
Delicious Designs have two tasty cheesecakes to try – cherry and blueberry. Naturally we decided on one of each and shared them. The result? A big surprise. A 9/10 for sure and we were lusting for more! Washed down well with a fresh cup of coffee and we were happy relaxing in the city of Belmopan. You will hear more of Belmopan, the Cayes and Belize as I thoroughly enjoyed my hectic but fulfilling week there.
The prices –
Any mug of coffee – 6 Belize Dollars ($3 US)
Cherry or Blueberry cheesecake –
OMG that Cheese cake looks so delicious!
Thanks for the comment guys – it really is delicious! You have to try it and you’re in Belize, so you can! Just head to Belmopan and the El Rey Hotel. Best wishes. Jonny
