On my last big trip (February 2020) as COVID was beginning, I toured seven African countries – South Africa, Angola, Zambia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. Although our first flight landed in Luanda, Angola – our first country to leave the airport on that trip was Namibia. I was here with two friends, Malina (from Poland) and Russell (from Australia). In Namibia, we toured Walvis Bay, Sandwich Harbour, Windhoek, Duesternbrook (where I got up close and personal to cheetahs) and even a chilled out night in the countryside at Vineyard Country Lodge.
We were in Windhoek in Namibia and found out about a restaurant called “Joe’s Beerhouse” in Windhoek, Namibia. I was staying in Windhoek at the Chameleon backpackers and walked down to Joe’s which was also my sightseeing tour of the capital city.
On my travels, I usually try to save and keep every photo and video but as I try to be organised – I had separate folders for “backpacking Windhoek”, “Joe’s Beerhouse” and “Chameleon Backpackers Hostel” and because of this – the ones I didn’t upload or save, they were lost in June 2020 the day I was hit by a train and almost died. A lot of photos from my last two trips before COVID were lost as they were only on my phone. This means I cannot share my tips on backpacking Windhoek city even though I did it. Instead, we get to read about the zebra steak that awaited me at Joe’s.
In here – the speciality is that almost all of the animals you saw on safari or in the wild, you can then eat them at night.! The menu is insane. First of all, I grabbed a beer – the menu for that is also decent. I always go local for beer though so I had a Windhoek Lager draught large at $29 Namibian Dollars, around £3.10 in Northern Irish pounds ($4.30 US Dollars back then).
Also, the Wi-Fi worked in here which is incredible! The beer and the quirky food are not the only attractions at Joe’s Beerhouse though – the setting is brilliant. It feels like you are in some kind of tropical jungle shack, even though this is in the city centre of the capital city! It’s an open plan setting, with a main bar in the middle and lots of nooks and crannies. It was also very lively – a truly great bar and easily in my top 50 bars from my travels.
For dinner I couldn’t believe the diversity of the menu and I was hungry that day. The menu photo is just a snippet, if you check their website there are so many more options. You can order Springbok, Kudu, Crocodile, Zebra, Lamb, Beef, Pork…
Straight away, I opted for the zebra loin steak which is 300 grams and comes with salad, garlic butter and chips. The price was 166 Namibian Dollars, which is £7.20 in Northern Irish pounds, at the time around $9 US Dollars.
And the better news?? This was completely delicious. Outstanding I’d say and on that particular jaunt to Africa, it was my favourite meal although many ran it close. We had another drink together before heading back to the hostel.
