“I drink to make other people more interesting” – Ernest Hemingway.
Thirsty Thursdays: Actually Drinking Blue CURAÇAO🔵🍊🇨🇼 in Curaçao at The Hemingway Bar, Mambo Beach. This is my first Thirsty Thursdays in a while and there will be more to come!! January and February 2023 are going to be intense catch up months for my blogs! I’ve missed these Thirsty Thursdays, now into my 17th calendar year as a travel blogger – now that is wacaday!! Without further ado, by total accident, I landed in…in…🔵🍊🇨🇼 Curaçao. Curaçao was NOT on my itinerary on this trip. I was always saving it to later as I class it as one of the ABC Islands – Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao! This was to be a future trip for me to island hop the hat-trick. But after 4 cancelled flights on this trip, instead of being in Haiti, on this night, for whatever reason I found myself unexpectedly in Curaçao!!! Here’s the story of how I drank Blue CURAÇAO🔵🍊🇨🇼 in Curaçao at The Hemingway Bar, Mambo Beach!
Firstly, to set the scene, let’s backtrack to Kingston Airport in Jamaica, because just before boarding my flight from Kingston Jamaica to Curaçao I bump into Shane, a former roadie with The Grateful Dead!! When I tell him I’m a writer whackpacking Curaçao by accident he doesn’t believe me. It was true of course! I wasn’t supposed to be here, but we got talking…
After telling him I am a writer, Shane mentions that there is a Hemingway Bar in Curacao! If I’m only here for one night, it’s a small island so I decided that I am definitely going there and I am having a BLUE CURACAO there! Arrival in Curacao was sweet and easy…
I’m losing track of my wacaday Hemingway experiences on my globe dotting. I have barely even written about these ones…Just lack of time to ever do all this.
1.September 2014. Hemingway Inn, San Jose, Costa Rica. I slept here and celebrated completing a visit to every country in mainland America. I had a celebratory beer with fellow writer Deacon Blake and toured the city with writer Michael Miller.
2.January 2015. Hemingway Bar, Helsinki, Finland. On arrival into Helsinki in Finland after a mad double boat journey from Estonia, I used the Hemingway Bar for free Wi-Fi and a beer while trying to contact my friends in Jaarvenpaa.
3.October 2017. Hemingway Bar, Gliwice, Poland. I attended the Germany v Northern Ireland under 19 match. My pre match wacaday tipple was a beer in Gliwices gorgeous square at the Hemingway Bar.
4.December 2022. El Floridita Bar, Havana, Cuba. Ernest Hemingway lived in Cuba so a pilgrimage there was easy. I had a Daiquiri Cocktail in the place where it all began.
5.December 2022. La Bodeguita Del Medio, Cuba. I popped intill this Hemingway haunt for a textbook Mojito. Glory days loyal.

I only ended up with a day and night in Curaçao due to another flight cancellation. I was supposed to be into my third day in Haiti by the time I left Curaçao behind! Shane told me of the excellent Hemingway Bar in Curaçao which just happens to be at Mambo Beach. Incidentally, arrival into Curaçao was nothing short of phenomenal and I was to learn that this is a paradise…
First of all, I checked into my hostel – Bikes and Beds – in Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao. I was in Bed D in a 12 bed dorm.
Then, I headed to Mambo Beach, about 3-4 kilometres east of the capital.
Mambo Beach is the place to be and it is jam packed with bars, clubs, shops and restaurants. It’s gorgeous! I pub crawled it to 4 bars here, starting of course in the Hemingway Bar, which I found quite quickly of course…
You might have expected me to have started in the Hemingway Bar with a trademark “Blue Curaçao in Curaçao” – you see I once did…
Bombay Sapphire in Bombay, Blair in Port Blair and Singapore Sling in Singapore. For prosperity…

And so with that hat-trick already swallowed, here in 2022 it was time for Curacao in Curacao, or was it????
However, I was seeking inspiration here at The Hemingway Bar and my barman was Michal. I noticed a cocktail on the menu called a HEMINGWAY COCKTAIL, which had an orange colour and ingredients of whiskey, triple sec, ice and cranberry juice. It had to be a HEMINGWAY first in HEMINGWAY, followed by a BLUE CURACAO in Curacao. This was nothing short of a writer’s dream!!
I ordered the Hemingway cocktail and it also came with a cherry on top, and tonight I was wearing a Cherries shirt (AFC Bournemouth!). The reason I wore that Cherries shirt is for the colour- turquoise! I was to have a Blue Curacao in Curaco, where waters are ocean blue, just like the seas by Bournemouth and Poole. And so arrives this beast to start with…
I devoured the Hemigway Cocktail and wrote a poem while sipping it. I’ll be adding it to my 2020s collection, my 4th decade collection of my poetry to be release soon. Meantime, I have only some on Jonny Blair Poetry and Jonny Blair Poetry Facebook.
After necking “The Hemingway” it was time for a BLUE CURACAO in Curacao!! This was something I had longed to do for YEARS – and I mean since 1986!! I don’t always share my childhood on here (some stories are in Backpacking Centurion Volume 1). Back in the 1980s, for some reason my Mum and Dad were always rather exotic – it was noted by my schoolmate Scott Callen, and I personally only noticed and dwelled on this later in life – I’d take Mexican tortilla crisps to school, eat blueberries and gooseberries, reject Mars bars and commercial yoghurts, and Dad used to buy random exotic liquers when on holiday – by the age of 10, I’d tried Peach Schnaps, Blue Curacao and Green Creme De Menthe. I always wanted a new one. It was Dad’s art and creativity mixed with Mum’s calmness and need for us to be happy that enlightened me and inspired me in all of that. Dad used to let me mix BLUE CURACAO with ice cream on a Sunday night (our family dinner night) and I loved it. When the time finally came for me to sip Blue Curacao IN CURACAO, I could think only how Dad and Mum inspired thsi journey, and not me. In many ways, this was the highlight of the trip, not just my trip to Curacao…and so the product arrives…to delight!
I devoured the delicious orange flavoured Blue Curacao, I wrote another poem before paying my bill and rolling myself into three more bars in Mambo Beach.
Also, the view and beach area of The Hemingway Bar from above is also class…
It was a good night out in Curacao but I had an early start to backpack the sights of Willemstad before leaving again. Here are the details of the brilliant Hemingway Bar in Curacao, which also has Wi-Fi and super staff:
