Today’s Thirsty Thursdays includes a fantastic sunset and a posh hotel. A bit abnormal for me to splash out or even visit a four star hotel, but this was a hot tip for any visit to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital. And I kind of had a good excuse for breaking the backpacker mould for an early evening beer – my parents were visiting me in Asia for the first time since 2011, so we headed to the recommended Galle Face Hotel for drinks and sunset. It was outstanding.
The Galle Face Hotel is worth it, let me tell you that. A fine menu, classic music, professionally dressed waiters, a relaxed ambience, a grassy garden, a minute’s walk from the Indian Ocean and an approaching sunset. The scene was set.
On this particular thirsty Thursday I found an “Irish Dark” beer on the menu at the Galle Face Hotel, so that it was, while my Dad chose a Lion Beer. We sipped them and then watch the sun sink over the horizon by the Indian Ocean. The beer prices are a lot dearer here than in most of Sri Lanka – but you can always spare it for one. My 3 Coins Irish Dark beer was 400 Rupees. Even though that’s more extreme than normal, it’s still only just over $3 US Dollars so dive in!
This is a very relaxing place. You can sit back and relax. Not a care in the world. I love quiet relaxing moments on my travels just as much as I love the adrenalin rush of running for a bus that should have already left.
How to get to the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo
Take a tuk tuk, also known as a three wheeler. The best way to see Sri Lanka’s capital city of Colombo. Bargain the price down.
Where to sit at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo
When you get to the Galle Face Hotel, head outside, a balcony view is best – we settled for the shade. When the sun starts to fade you can stand up and head to the ocean for your photos and viewpoints anyway.
What time to head there
You don’t want to spend a lot of money as the menu isn’t cheap, even by Sri Lanka’s standards so half an hour before sunset is sufficient enough. Time of sunset will of course depend on the time of year you go, so check in advance. I think we got there around 5.15 pm and stayed for a couple of hours, relaxing. Then this…
What’s the Sunset Like?
Fantastic. In fact, here are a few photos on this Thirsty Thursday to wet your appetite…
