Today on World Travellers we meet Mo Draj who runs the excellent Mosaffer Travel Blog. Mo shares his stories of where he has been and where he’s heading next. In line with the ongoing range of nationalities featured on here, in the last month I’ve had English, Irish, Lithuanian, Norwegian and now a Palestinian traveller. Pretty topical and ironic as I type this up from the West Bank in Palestine. Over to you Mo…
Who are you?
At the core of my veins I am a born traveler and adventures who loves life and people. Call me Mo, that simple. I blog on my travel blog Mosaffer.com sharing travel tips, travel tricks, travel pics and of course I share my travel stories.
Where are you from?
I am originally from the holy land Palestine.
Where have you been?
I am not the type of person who count countries really, I am more into getting deep within cities, but if I must say where I’ve been, well, I’ve traveled by car from UAE to Lebanon on family trip when I was a teenager; we covered Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, on that trip we have been all around Lebanon and Syria, North, South, East and West. Growing up I started traveling solo, been to Germany and Denmark to visit relatives, traveled to England, Holland and Portugal to visit some friends, decided to travel with group of friends to Scotland, traveled solo Spain, Ireland and Northern Ireland, and lived in Abu Dhabi, Tralee, Madrid, Belfast, Dublin and Cork.
Where are you now?
Currently I live in the beautiful city of Cork, Ireland. Planning my big adventure, by the end of this year I am departing on one-way flight ticket to Bangkok, Thailand.
What are the top 3 places you’ve visited?
Hard to tell, every place to me is special, though Ireland is amazing country, most people think it’s just the country for alcohol drinking, but there is so much to see and do here, adventure and beautiful nature. Spain is special in my heart, the people, the food, and the parties are top notch, I will always return to this country. Portugal, or should I say Lisbon, by far one of the most fascinating cities I have ever been in, people, food, parties, sun, beach, history, hospitality, street art and murals all on all is stunning. (That will put a smile on Tiago’s face)
What is the best travel experience you’ve had?
Uffff – I have many experiences, I am not sure where to start, though my first time solo trip was a special one. I decided to travel to Spain with an absolute no plans in what I am doing, assuming “No Plan Is The Best Plan” – that’s how it happened, when I say “No Plan Is The Best Plan” I meant it and traveled with it. I just booked one-way flight ticket and decided to start my trip in not knowing anything, no preparation, no organization, no nothing, it was by far my most wonderful experiences that made me addicted more into traveling.
What is the worst travel experience you’ve had?
The worst was in Cairo, Egypt (Damn it, see, I never count countries, forgot to mention that above) where I was on a trip with my parents and my mum’s bag was stolen. There was three passports, two digital cameras, (My parents & my own) among other stuff and of course good amount of money for three people, and it was only our second day arriving after visiting the pyramids. Definitely an experience we will never forget and taught us a lesson.
What is the funniest travel experience you’ve had?
I wake up late to catch my flight to Edinburgh, Scotland last year, I looked at the time and I said Sh*****T I am not gonna make it, and I went back to sleep. Five minutes later I decided to text my friends just to inform them I wont make it. Seconds later my friend rang me and said: Can you be down stairs in five minutes we are passing by your place now and can pick you up? (They were in the taxi)
Jonny boi, I am not even joking with you when I say, packed my bag, change my cloths, washed my face, brushed my teeth and went down stairs within four minutes and they were waiting for me. Arrived to the airport, going through security and running to the gate until I saw the gate is not even open yet. We looked at each other’s smiling and laughing and said: – Typical – Ryanair
What is the scariest travel experience you’ve had?
I am not sure what you mean by the scariest, I did scuba diving in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, bungee jumping in Ireland, and skydiving in Madrid, Spain, and that didn’t scare me one bit. (I swear – I am being modest)
What is the most random job you have had on your travels?
I am not like you Jonny, I haven’t worked and travel, not yet anyways, ask me this question again sometime next year and I would be happy to answer, but I do have a feeling I will be working in jobs that I have never thought I will do in my life, its all part of traveling I guess.
How do you fund your travels?
I always saved money before I go on a trip somewhere, as I am doing now, its one of the most challenging things any traveler comes across, but its damn worth it.
What 3 tips would you give a new traveller before they set off on their adventure?
My best advise I could give to anyone who wants to travel is (Stop thinking and start doing) – A few good advises to start with is travel in your own style, don’t let someone tell you how to travel, travel is suppose to be fun and enjoyable, try set up a goal for your trip, don’t over plan because that will change once on the road, have a basic idea in what you want, follow your guts and deal with it, bring an open mind with you because you will need it too.
What are your future travel plans?
I am flying on one-way ticket to Bangkok, Thailand on December, honestly Jonny, that’s all I know so far. But as I said earlier, every traveler sets a goal, and my goal is simple, explore, wonder and get lost.
