Staying at the Mad Hatter Hotel, Southwark, London, England

You’ll probably be aware that I’m a big fan of London, England. Not only did I once spend a year working here in Public Relations for Apple, but apart from Belfast City, London is the city that I have spent the longest amount of time in during my life and I always treasure my time there.

I once lived in Shepherd’s Bush and have stayed in mates houses and flats all over the city (literally 100 times!) but this time, I was heading to a Travel Bloggers Event, checking out the poppies at the Tower of London and reviewing some tours so I needed a pretty good central base and hotel to stay in. I couldn’t believe it when I found that the Mad Hatter Hotel ticked all the boxes I wanted, especially location wise and the fact it has a decent pub downstairs. So I checked in and loved it.

So here are five cool reasons why you should choose to stay in the Mad Hatter Hotel when you are next in London:

1. Location Perfect
In terms of Central London, I believe this location to be perfect. It’s far enough away from the tourist crowds to avoid being busy, it’s a 3 minute walk from the Thames at Blackfriars Bridge. It’s a 5 minute walk from Tube stations Southwark, Blackfriars and Waterloo. Especially being close to Waterloo helps as I was heading on a train to Windsor next and the location was just perfect.

2. Downstairs Pub
Good old England. By now, if you’ve followed my adventures you’ll know that I like a good old decent pub and you don’t have to go far – the Mad Hatter is also the name of the downstairs pub! It’s a Fullers pub which is great and you can get a free pint on arrival if you have signed up to their mailing list. I’d recommend sticking to London Pride – a top notch English beer.

The pub has hearty food menus too and a typical interior decor that is all an English pub should be.

3. Fast Free Wi-Fi
The Wi-Fi is fast and works in the rooms and in the downstairs bar. Perfect for keeping touch with people for free and for writing the odd travel article!

4. Luxury Rooms
If you thought that a bedroom above a pub in England was going to be dingy and noisy, think again. In fact, my room was one of the cosiest and most luxurious I’ve had in recent times. I’d spent a few days at my mates flat, in University Halls and in hostels just before this and no surprise – this was my favourite room as I could really relax here.

5. Free Tea, Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Biscuits…
You might have heard me complaining about some of the horrendous hotels I’ve stayed in before such as the Hotel Ushuaia (Argentina) and the Hotel Sao Francisco (Brazil) which refused to give even a free coffee! The English know better and with this being a Fuller’s Bar and Hotel, of course you get free tea and coffee. Not just that but shortbread biscuits, hot chocolate and even a coffee drainer! Splendid.

As well, I’m a big fan of Fuller’s the beer brand and I hope I can bring you more stories on Fuller’s in future, perhaps from the Brewery itself or some of their other bars round England. Here are my videos from my stay in the Mad Hatter:
