You have to admire the Scottish even if you don’t love them. They have quirky off the wall stuff that will only ever be relevant in Scotland. OK, and occassionally the Northern Irish will dig them too. One such delicacy on the Friday’s Featured Food corner is the deep fried Mars Bar! I’d already toured Edinburgh, stayed in the best local hostel and tried Haggis, Tatties and Neeps.
You have a couple of choices and I tried them both:
1. Eat your deep fried Mars Bar in a bar/pub/restaurant and it comes on a plate with ice cream and will cost between £2.50 – 4. Ouch, but hey worth it as a one off. Incidentally I tried mine in the horrible Royal Mile Tavern – a terrible pub with rude arrogant doormen, so one to avoid.
2. Eat your deep fried Mars Bar from a local chip shop – this is the best bargain option and you can get it for around £1 – £2.
Of course you could also buy a Mars Bar for 50p and deep fry it yourself. But hey? Why the fuck go all the way backpacking in China when you can buy a chicken fried rice in Belfast eh? You can also try deep fried Snickers, Twixes, Lion Bars…you name it, they’ll deep fry it!
No seriously – Scottish people are brilliant on the most part and this is a food you must try!
Also while looking for my own video, I realised that Sam and Audrey – two famous travel bloggers have also tried the Mars bars in Edinburgh, Scotland:
And here’s my minor effort:
Heard about this quirky little dessert! What were your first impressions when you first ate it?

Hi Ray – loved it. You know what – I love Scottish things. Might have something to do with the fact my surname comes from there and that Northern Ireland and Scotland are close countries. We both have more time for each other than the English or the Southern Irish. If you havent had the deep fried Mars Bars please do – I loved it. Nomadic Sam and Audrey are Canadian by the way – great bloggers and travellers. Safe travels. Jonny
Hi Priya – indeed – great snack and a great country – I love Scotland. You shoudl try the haggis, tatties and neeps too: Safe travels, Jonny
I was there during the Fringe festival, it was a wonderful experience.
