For whatever reason life dealt me, I ended up in the city of Shymkent in southern Kazakhstan recently and after negotiating my way across the Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan border despite not having a Kazak visa on the same passport, I finally arrived in this backpacker’s gem – Shymkent. You might have read how I found a quaint little hotel with a Japanese history to it, the Orbita Boutique Hotel and based myself here for four days while also touring the sights of unshy Shymkent and the holy town of Turkistan.

The phone rings in my hotel room and I’m invited for a treat of a wild boar roast on a Sunday afternoon watching the live English Premier League “top of the table clash” between Leicester City and Arsenal.
Having a Shymkent Beer at Orbita Boutique Hotel
The roast arrives and it’s a huge helping. To wash it down, I opt for Shymkentsky Lager Beer. It’s the local brew here and goes does very easily. It reminds me of the Northern Irish Harp Lager.
Enjoying my Sunday Wild Boar Roast in Shymkent, Kazakhstan
Leicester City are 1-0 up and should go on to win the Premier League but flukey Arsenal come back and win 2-1 with the last kick of the match. I watched the match with two local lads while scoffing my delicious dinner. The Cherries, AFC Bournemouth, now Premier League lost 3-1 to Stoke City the day before. It was a great feast, thanks to the chef at Orbita Hotel in Shymkent for sorting it out.

How was the wild boar? Similar to eating ham, but with far more spices and more tender I imagine?
Hi Ray, a pretty good judgement there by you – yes very similar and goes down easily. Not as spicy as you’d think though, a huge difference between Central Asia and India in terms of spice. Safe travels. Jonny
