Living in the Cloud of Africa: My Stay at The Anne Guesthouse in Maseru, Lesotho

When I finally visited Lesotho in 2020, I based myself on the edge of the capital city – Maseru. I arrived into Lesotho at Moeshoeshoe International Airport by flight from Johannesberg, and later left by land border at Maseru Bridge, to Bloemfontein, one of three South African capital cities (and my completion of that). In Lesotho, I stayed at a beautiful newly opened guesthouse which was a totally super haven here in the capital city. I landed on my feet at the Anne Guesthouse, Lower Thetsane, Maseru, Lesotho.

The Anne Guesthouse opened as recently as 2018 and is in the Lower Thetsane district of Maseru, providing me with a great base for my hat-trick of days in this landlocked mini-country. Here are the things I liked about my stay, apart from the fact that it is so new and I was one of the first bloggers and writers to spend a night here. Plus I witnessed the top of the table football clash in the capital Bantu v. Matlama (finished 1-1) – this was a dream for a Glentoran fan from “little Northern Ireland”.

I also toured the spiritual heart of Lesotho at Thaba Bosiu – a fascinating place.

1.Safety and Security

The entrance gate at The Anne is manned 24 hours a day. There is barbed wire fencing at the top of the high walls around the complex. The Anne Guesthouse is in a quiet and calm Maseru suburb. All 10 rooms are safe and secure. I was in Room 1. It was safe, calm and secure. A tourist’s dream, not always a tourist’s reality.

2.Relaxing Gardens

What hit me first about Lesotho is that the country has beautiful landscape. This was visible on my flight in and my various drives around the country.

You can gaze into the hills here from the relaxing green gardens at the Anne Guesthouse. I was also able to use the garden and hot sun to get my dirty clothes washed and dried. A beer in the garden was bliss.

3.Good Breakfast

Breakfast is served from 7-9 am and contains a huge selection. The chefs cook your eggs, bacon, sausages and all to your exact requirements. I am not a fusspot however and I went for generic…it was great.

4.Open Staff

Over the course of a hat-trick of days, I met all the staff here including the security guards who may well have been surprised to find I was a night owl – I went on the rip each night in Maseru and came home late after some bar hopping (Thirsty Thursdays till come so it is). The ladies were not shy to pose for photos.

5.Peaceful, cosy rooms

I was in Room 1 round the side. I was actually a bit tired when I checked in and then…I saw my room.

As a bonus I also found time to wash and dry my clothes here. Sun aided fun.
