“A very big house in the country” – Damon Albarn.
Dominica came as a big surprise to me. It’s a beautiful island country and one that I did two COVID tests in during my December 2021 Eastern Caribbean adventure. It was a topsy turvy trip and this place was a pleasing greeny paradise.
I chose to stay at the Roseau Valley Hotel which is in the countryside away from the beaches and coast. This was a wonderfully welcoming place and allowed me to escape the beach life for a while in the Caribbean in exchange for greenery. Mind you, I did still visit the beach in Roseau and watch the sunset there.
Here at the Roseau Valley Hotel, as well as having a sleeping break from the beach, I was able to visit both coasts of Dominica as well as the capital city, Roseau itself and a few hikes and waterfalls. Here are some things I enjoyed about my stay at the gorgeous Roseau Valley Hotel in Dominica.
1.Spacious Retreat
I backpacked through Dominica during December 2021 when COVID 19 was rife and rearing. The fact that I was totally safe here from the virus was helpful. My room was spacious. The staff Patsy and Joseph were mask loyal. I didn’t meet or see many other people during my time in this retreat. Had I needed to self isolate, this place is perfect.
2.Fast WiFi
Again I was pleasantly surprised by the fast WiFi here at the Roseau Valley Hotel in the Caribbean. I certainly needed it to book onward flights and PCR tests. It was a busy time though and I didn’t have time to blog.
3.Short drive from Roseau (West Coast)
Dominica’s small yet bubbly capital city Roseau isn’t far. It’s a 10-12 minute drive! Despite having my time cut here by doing 2 COVID PCR tests, I was still able to backpack the key sights of Roseau.
In fact, I did another negative COVID PCR Test at Windsor Park. Yes, Dominica’s National Football Stadium is also called Windsor Park, the same as Northern Ireland’s!
4.Short drive from Waterfalls (Inland)
Dominica is known as “The Nature Island” in the Caribbean and for this reason I wanted to see some of the scenery and waterfalls. The island boasts greenery, lakes, volcanoes, mountains, waterfalls and beaches and it certainly lives up to its nature moniker.
By staying at the Roseau Valley Hotel you are a short drive from quite a few waterfalls and hikes as well as being surrounded by greenery.
5.Near to Morne Trois Pitons National Park (East Coast)
So, you are close to the capital city Roseau, close to the west coast and close to nature. Let’s make it a hattrick. By staying at the Roseau Valley Hotel you are also a short drive from the UNESCO listed Morne Trois Pitons National Park.
6.Welcoming Hosts
I was welcomed by Patsy on arrivation after yet another PCR Test (compulsory on arrival in Dominica during December 2021). Patsy was a great host who helped organise my tours, my PCR test and provide me with coffee (which was rare on my Caribbean adventure – the least amount of coffee I had drank in years!). I also met Kenrick Isles, her nephew. Between them it’s a great business and I hope they survive the COVID crisis and attract full houses very soon!
7.Government Approved
I have to stress the importance of a hotel in Dominica being government approved. During my visit, the country was very difficult to get into. My first visa was rejected even after I had paid the advance fee of 100 Eastern Caribbean Dollars for the on arrival mandatory PCR COVID test. I was confused as to why I had to apply two weeks in advance for the visa yet had to attach a negative COVID PCR test which was taken 72 hours before my arrival! It was timeoclockily not possible!
There is only a short list of hotels that are government approved and even in the capital city, I only saw one of these – The Flamboyant Hotel. So please book the Roseau Valley Hotel and save the rejections. It’s on the official Dominica government website.
8.My Balcony
I’d ask for room 2 if I was you. Imagine wakening up each day to this view…
9.It Looks Good!
Is a hotel looking good with a leafy garden and a colourful facade a reason to book it? Yes! Down the years I’ve slowly got round to appreciating how good a hotel looks. From the front of the Roseau Valley Hotel you can feel the magic. A super building with textbook Dominican background landscape with cosy rooms to sleep in…
