It’s often said that capital cities of Africa are usually not the best spots to backpack through to experience that there country.
Underwhelming and lackadaisical could be said of a few of my prior capitals on that there continent. Examples that springbourne to mind are Porto Novo (Benin), Lome (Togo) and Kampala (Uganda). In Malawi, I also stayed at Mufasa Eco Lodge in Monkey Bay, as well as eating fish by Lake Malawi and backpacking at Cape Maclear and Dedza.
I originally was only going to backpack the sights of Lilongwe on a day trip but eventually decided on a night here. Backpacking in the capital city of Malawi will hardly be a highlight from this humungous continent but I still got to see a bit of this capital, which houses just under 1 million people.
I’ve skipped a fair few African capital cities down the years. By that I mean never even went to them yet was in their country. I byballed Mbabane (Eswatini), Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania), Kinshasa (The Democratic Republic of Congo), Rabat (Morocco), Lusaka (Zambia), Harare (Zimbabwe), Gitega (Burundi) and Maputo (The Bake). Finally I rocked up to backpack Lilongwe which I nicknamed “The Long Way”. I stayed in a textbook backpackers hostel here. Mabuya is definitely a decent spot.
Mabuya Backpackers Hostel in Lilongwe was only $12 US Dollars a night for a dorm bed.
I was top bunk loyal in an 8 bed dorm where some foreign freak coughed spluttered and farted all night as a COVID loyal freak.
Still I managed to get a decent night sleep here in a cosy hostel despite the COVID loyalist gimp. I had mosquito nets.
They had working WiFi in reception and nearby which allowed social media uploads and Hotmail.
The leafy large gardens and balcony are a good place to chill.
The kitchen or restaurant was closed on my visit but chilled beers of an evening and decent coffee of a morning were possible. The local beer is KK – Kuche Kuche.
