Before you read this, look at the above photo and watch Omam Biyick’s legendary header below. I watched it live after school in June 1990 in Marlo in Bangor, Northern Ireland. I wanted Cameroon to win. I loved it. I love it. I still love it.

“Omam-Biyick oh and he scored” – 1990 World Cup commentator!

Life took a completely inspirational and ridiculous turn and twist for me when I finally finally got a Cameroon Visa and landed in Douala. Twenty four years later…wow! I was going to have my 44th Birthday in Cameroon, an incredible dream became a reality, and was even better than I could ever have fathomed!

Welcome to Cameroon!!
I’m actually finally really eventually in Cameroon!

My Backstory: 2024 to 1990 – Cameroon 🇨🇲 At Italia 90

Ever since Omam-Biyick’s header in 1990 for Cameroon against Argentina, I have followed Cameroon’s football results. I have a soft spot for them, despite my clear bias of Northern Ireland. Back in 1990, as I watched live on TV in my living room in Marlo, Bangor, Northern Ireland, Cameroon played Argentina in the opening match. It was to be unforgettable! One brother, Omam-Biyick scored the winner against Maradona’s Argentina, the other brother, Kana-Biyick hacked down Caniggia and got a red card. Cameroon finished the match with 9 men, with Beni Massing also getting a red for an absolutely nuts challenge also on Caniggia. Cameroon won the match 1-0, later winning the group after beating Romania 2-1 and progressing to the quarter finals after beating Colombia 2-1 in the last 16. Roger Milla and Omam-Biyick were my heroes!

Roger Milla and Cameroon in 1990
Roger Milla and Cameroon in 1990

In the quarter finals, Cameroon were 2-1 up against England with multiple chances to make it 3-1, before England fluked their way through with two Gary Lineker McCrums. I still think Cameroon were the best team in that World Cup and it’s the best ever African performance at any World Cup, yes even better than Morocco’s slide into the 2022 semi finals and Ghana’s near McCrum miss v. Uruguay in 2010.

So ever since 1990, I have wanted to go to Cameroon and in February 2024, I finally booked a flight on Air Maroc from Casablanca, Morocco into Yaounde, Cameroon. Actually it worked out cheaper to book an extra flight all the way to Douala! I landed in Douala…and got a taxi to my lovely resort here – the Foyer Du Marin Hotel! My first beer in Cameroon was even a Harp! Not the exact same as the Northern Irish beer but uncannily similar logo and label  colour!

Backpacking in Douala, Cameroon

Thanks to my guide, Mebah Markdonald, I was able to backpack the key sights of Douala, as well as do a pub crawl and chill out by the swimming pool in my amazing resort at the Foyer Du Marin. At midnight, as my birthday hit, the owner Klaus served me up a special rare shot and I had a mini-party in the hotel with a few other backpackers!

That was all cool of course, but my main reason for backpacking Cameroon was actually to watch some football…you know what’s coming.

Living My 1990 Football Dream In Cameroon: Watching The Top Division Play-Offs And Meeting Samuel Eto’o In Douala!!

The Venue – Stade Mbappé Léppé

My guide was Mebah Markdonald (full details of Mebah and his company at the bottom of this post) and I was joined by his friend for the day – Clement. The match we decide to watch is played at the famous Stade Mbappé Léppé. For those who don’t know – Samuel Mbappe Leppe was the 1960s Roger Milla, and Roger Milla was the 1980s Samuel Eto’o. The Cameroon flag flies proudly at the Stade Mbappé Léppé. I’m a bit surprised that this stadium is right opposite the main Cathedral, which was in my top backpacking sights of Douala.

The Venue - Stade Mbappé Léppé, Douala, Cameroon

Samuel Mbappé Léppé played for Oryx Douala in the 1950s and 1960s, winning five Cameroon championship titles (1961, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1967), thrice the Cameroon Cup (1963, 1968 and 1970) and he was the first captain to lift the African Cup of Champions Clubs, doing so in the 1964–65 season! Roger Milla describes him as being the greatest ever African footballer, though me – I vote for Roger! Over the course of his career, Samuel earned several transfer deals European clubs offered him a chance to play professional football in Europe but he refused to join them. He stayed loyal to Cameroon. I got a photo by his statue outside the ground.

Stade Samuel Mbappé Léppé is formally known as Stade Akwa and is a multi-use stadium in Douala, Cameroon. It is currently used mostly for football matches obviously. It serves as a home ground of Kadji Sports Academy. The stadium holds just over 4,000 people. Once admiring it from the outside, it was time to get a ticket and go in. Samuel Mbappé Léppé wasn’t to be the only Samuel on this inspirational day.

Getting My Match Ticket

We walk up to the gate and it’s pay cash onthe gate for the match ticket. It’s just Clement and I going. We are attending the top flight play-off match between Stade Renard (from this city – Douala) playing against Canon Yaounde (from Yaounde – the capital city). My ticket number is 6939. There’s a lively crowd developing here in the Cameroonian heat. The ticket was 1,000 CAF – Central African Francs which works out around £1.30 in Northern Irish pounds or $2.00 US Dollars.

They rip the ticket in half as you  go in which is a shame but I still get to keep the half ticket part.

The Bar at Stade Mbappé Léppé

Once inside, I was pretty surprised, beer and other alcohol is available all the time. No strictness like in England or Northern Ireland. You can buy a beer and just drink it watching the match, so we do!

The Bar at Stade Mbappé Léppé – choosing the beers

For the first half, Clement and I have a beer each – they don’t have the Cameroonian Harp here so instead we both have a can of the 33 Export – which is not an export – it’s a pure Cameroonian beer, and it’s good! For the second half, I spy this “Whisky Cola” at 7% alcohol in a can and it’s only about a dollar more than the beer so I get two and this is a great second half tipple!

The Match – Stade Renard v Canon Yaounde

Of course the main point is the match itself, but that almost took second stage for me today as I’m so in awe of the stadium, the atmosphere, the locals, the bar and the fact that I’m the only foreigner, the only Caucasian, the only white person here!

Meeting Samuel Eto’o By Fluke!!!

Half-way through the first half, we gaze to the right where a group of fans are walking in front of us. It’s Samuel Eto’o!! I cannot believe it!! Clement confirms this and thinks it is nuts – the fact that I came to this very match and by chance there is Samuel Eto’o!! This is nuts. He’s right there with his mates. Below in the white t-shirt, black baseball cap and blue jeans. Like the most regular guy ever!

Meeting Samuel Eto’o By Fluke!!!

Who is Samuel Eto’o?

To put things in context – Samuel Eto’o (born 10 March 1981, so less than a year after me) is a Cameroonian football administrator and former player who is the current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (as of 2025). He won the African Player of the Year a record four times: in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2010. A precocious talent, Eto’o moved to Real Madrid as a 16 year old.

Meeting Samuel Eto’o By Fluke!!!

Eto’o was put out on loan by Real Madrid and ended up signing full-time for Real Mallorca in 2000 where he scored 70 goals, a club record. His impressive form saw him join Barcelona in 2004 where he scored 130 goals in five seasons and also became the record holder for the most appearances by an African player in La Liga. Just watch this for proof…

Winning La Liga three times, Samuel Eto’o was a key member of the Barcelona attack where he played alongside Ronaldinho. He was in the same team as Andres Iniesta for years. Barcelona won the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final, with Eto’o scoring in the final, and he was part of an incredible front three of Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry that again won the 2009 Champions League Final, with Eto’o again scoring in the final! He managed to score in two Champions League finals and won the tournament thrice, doing so in 2010 again this time with Inter Milan.

While at Barcelona, Eto’o also came in third for the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2005 and was twice named in the FIFA FIFPro World XI, in 2005 and 2006. He also played in 3 World Cups, won 2 African Nations Cups and played in a further 6 tournaments, finishing as top scorer in 2006 and 2008.

In 1998, he was the youngest participant in the 1998 FIFA World Cup when he appeared in a 3–0 group stage loss to Italy on 17 June 1998, at the age of 17 years and three months, not too far away from beating Norman Whiteside’s record – Norman from Belfast in Northern Ireland, is also one of my heroes. Samuel Eto’o won a GOLD for Cameroon at the 2000 Olympics and played in 4 World Cups. These records make him probably the most decorated African footballer EVER.

My childhood hero: Stormin Norman Whiteside was 17 at the 1982 World Cup

So that is Samuel Eto’o…

And there he is, just sitting calmly behind me at one point – watching the match! And this was a wild fluke, a crazy coincidence. Of all the times I could have visited Cameroon, of all the matches I could have attended and yet I chose this time and this one. Neither Mebah Markdonald nor any of his tour company nor anyone in my hotel nor Clement my tour guide for the day had ever even seen Samuel Eto’o never mind shake his hand, talk to him, get a photo with him and get his autograph! It was my destiny to meet Samuel Eto’o. Samuel Eto’o is without doubt the coolest, calmest celebrity I have ever met!! Here he is just behind me!!

Meeting Samuel Eto’o By Fluke!!! He’s watching the match behind me!!!
Meeting Samuel Eto’o By Fluke!!! He is in the seat next to Clement in the background!

I went up to Samuel Eto’o, totally confidently, not shy at all and showed him my Northern Ireland shirt and badge. I just said “Samuel I’m a big fan. Great to see you here at a match!”. He says “Hi! You good?” back and then I hand him my match ticket and a pen and ask for his autograph on the back. “No problem. Enjoy the game”. He signs it and hands the ticket back, proper gentleman here. “Thanks Samuel”, I mutter, not even shocked I used his first name – I mean I’d seen him on TV enough times! It was a mind-blowing incredible moment. This was Samuel Eto’o! He’s globally more famous than Roger Milla and Francois Omam-Biyick of course, but those were my original Cameroonian heroes yet here I was with the man who eclipsed both their careers!

Samuel Eto’o’s Autograph on the back of my match ticket!!Incredible

After that, the euphoria of how calm and cool Samuel Eto’o was, everything else seemed irrelevant. We had another Whisky Cola and watched the rest of the second half. The away side slid in an equaliser to make it 1-1 and that was that.

Final Score – Stade Renard 1-1 Canon Yaounde

Canon grab a second half equaliser on 62 minutes and we continue drinking in the sun. Music plays, fans sing, Eto’o enjoys the match and I’m in awe and in love with Cameroon just like I was in 1990. They can come true. Yeah they can come true. Dreams can come true. We are completely and utterly blessed in life. Something must be written in the stars.

Final Score – Stade Renard 1-1 Canon Yaounde

I also noted that the teams played each other again in December 2024 and it was also a 1-1 draw. Plus, they will  also play each other again on my 45th Birthday, 30th March 2025!

To get your Cameroon visa, you need to have a host or a letter of invitation. I contacted local businessman and tour manager Mebah Markdonald. Mebah is excellent. He is everything he says he is. A top man. He sent me privately all the details I would need for using him and his company as my host and letter of invitation. These are Mebah’s details if you want to contact him.

How To Get A Cameroon🇨🇲Multiple Entry Tourist Visa Online

“Round this town, you’ve ceased to be. That’s what you get for sleeping with the enemy” – Noel Gallagher.

It was a childhood dream of mine to visit Cameroon. It was a long hard road since Benjamin Massing’s red card of 1990. It was easy for the Indomitable Lions to beat Diego Maradona’s mighty World Champions of Argentina back then. However, the Cameroon visa was always a tough one and for some reason I always skipped that region of Africa (Niger, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Gabon, Cameroon)! The nearest I got was Angola or the east side of the Democratic Republic of The Congo. But now that The Cameroon Visa went online, I thought I’d finally give Cameroon a go without any embassy visits required. The result was waking up in Yaounde, the capital city of Cameroon and possessing a multiple-entry tourist visa for Cameroon.

I’m actually finally really eventually in Cameroon! 🇨🇲

Backstory to 1990 – Cameroon 🇨🇲 At Italia 90

Ever since Omam-Biyick’s header in 1990 for Cameroon against Argentina, I have followed Cameroon’s football results. I have a soft spot for them, despite my clear bias of Northern Ireland. How To Get A Cameroon 🇨🇲Visa Online

Cameroon has now introduced an electronic visa, also called an e-visa or an online visa to facilitate entry into its territory, on the west/central coast of Africa. The new service enables people to apply for a visa to Cameroon from the comfort of their own home or office, it means you do not have to go to an Embassy any longer! That is good news! Please refer to the Cameroon Online Visa Application guidelines here (this is on the official site). I did all this from the comfort of my flat in Warszawa in Poland. You don’t need to be in Africa, or at a Cameroon Embassy.

Welcome Jonny To Cameroon Visa Online

I had read online before my trip that certain nationalities can get a visa online. But it all depends on your nationality, I travel with two Northern Irish passports (one from “UK”, one from “Ireland”, neither of which I recognise as a real country!) but I used my Irish one for this, which is allowed. Some nationalities may not be entitled to the visa online. Check if you are eligible for the online visa, then start your application. You will need an email address to be confirmed and then you log in.

So in short – first things first, you need to go to the official Cameroon Online Visa website. This is the exact link –

Filling In The Online Visa for Cameroon🇨🇲

This is not easy, it took me ages, hours. I filled in every single part in detail as I didn’t want to risk not getting the visa. I was honest in every question including the correct hotel, arrival date, parents details, tour company, letter of invitation, bank statement, job title, yellow fever certificate etc. etc.! Take your time. I did it on my laptop and made sure to save it after each part. I don’t really like these online visas and this is why I am very happy these days that I only do these things once. If I could get a secretary to do all this, actually I would probably take it these days, but then again I couldn’t write about it. You’ll need to have a local host, a letter of invitation…

What Documents Do You Need To Upload?

This was not easy. However, I uploaded ALL the documents they needed and due to that fact, I overloaded them with documents – I sent MORE than what they asked for. These are the documents they asked for –

  • passport photo page upload
  • passport sized photo upload
  • flight into Cameroon proof upload
  • flight out of Cameroon proof upload
  • yellow fever certificate proof upload
  • COVID triple vaccination certificate proof upload
  • hotel reservation proof upload
  • amount of money I have in my bank account proof upload
  • proof of my job upload (I always write “teacher”; as a rule, NEVER write “writer”/”journalist” as it immediately raises suspicion)
  • proof of my address upload (I used my Driving Licence for this)
  • proof of my professional qualifications upload
  • proof of a letter of invitation upload

Phew! I think that was it! Now how did I upload them all? Some I took a screen shot of the PDF or online form and some I simply took a photo with my Samsung Smartphone! All were accepted eventually despite the screen timeouts (see below). Here are some of the proofs of upload I added…

Proof of flight out
Proof of hotel
My brace of COVID certificates and my Yellow Fever Certificate.
My hat-trick of COVID certificates and my Yellow Fever Certificate.

Eventually, ALL of those uploads went through and were accepted! Phew! But beware of the screen timeouts…

Session Expired / Screen Timeouts! Annoying!

Be very careful uploading your documents and filling in the information as the screen timeouts many times and your session expires. Each time I thought I had finished, I hit save and the screen timed out meaning the last few documents/files hadn’t been uploaded. This is very frustrating and annoying!

The constant annoying Timeout Sessions!

Just bear with it, keep trying. It took me a few hours but finally I had uploaded EVERY document they asked for and more. So now you have the visa application filled in and sent, it’s time to make the payment. The first 3 parts are green, now it is time to make the payment, see screen shot below.

How much does the visa for Cameroon 🇨🇲cost?

Obviously the price can change, and will change in future and depending on your nationality, the type of visa. I went for multiple entry tourist visa. When I applied in March 2024, a multiple entry visa was 153 Euros, plus a 13.77 Euros transfer fee. My total was 166.77 Euros and I paid online by card payment. I believe PayPal can also be used but I paid on card.

Paying for the Cameroon Visa Online – mine was 166.77 Euros on 3rd March 2024

After the above screen I filled in my payment card details after being transferred to a DBS screen. After submitting the payment, this was confirmed and checked and the screen now had the below image with Order Confirmation on it

Paying for the Cameroon Visa Online – mine was 166.77 Euros on 3rd March 2024

That was on 3rd March 2024 that I made the payment. Almost immediately, I got an email in my inbox with a PDF recipt to say that I had paid for my visa and confirmation that my visa application was in progress. The payment email looks like this.

The Waiting Game – Application In Progress

Once you have completed the application and made the payment, and got the payment confirmation and application confirmation, it is a waiting game. I made the payment on 3rd March 2024 and the screen on login looked like this below.

My application is in progress

Then, within 72 hours, on exactly 6th March 2024, I got another email also with a PDF attached, this email wrote that my pre-enrolement for the Cameroon Online Visa was approved. This of course is not the visa, basically just a permission to board the flight, or cross by land and arrive into Cameroon. And that is the complete process before the flight or trip. The pre-enrolement email looked like this. That means a total of 4 different emails are received in the process.

1.Confirmation of your email.
2.Permission to login and make an application.
3.Confirmation of the payment for the visa.
4.Confirmation that the visa application has been confirmed for pre-enrolement.

My pre-enrolement for the Cameroon Online Visa was approved

The PDF attached to it looked like this – which I printed ahead of my trip. This is as good as your visa.

What To Print Before You Head To Cameroon🇨🇲

So now that I had the confirmation of the pre-enrolment, I decided to print and take as much proof as I could with me on the trip, I’m so used to the strictness of it all these days that I always come way too prepared now. I was actually boarding my initial flight in Brussels in Belgium, transiting through Casablanca in Morocoo and then landing in Yaounde, Cameroon. Here is what I took with me to the airport in Brussels.

  • My passport
  • Proof of yellow fever vaccination (this WAS checked)
  • Proof of COVID triple vaccinations (this was never checked, but don’t bank on that)
  • Proof of flight into Cameroon
  • Proof of flight out of Cameroon (this was never checked, but don’t bank on that)
  • Proof of hotel reservation
  • Proof of contact in Cameroon (Mebah and his tour company)
  • Proof of payment for Cameroon Visa
  • Proof of pre-enrolement for Cameroon Visa
  • Travel insurance card (this was never checked, but don’t bank on that)
  • Driving licence (the only ID I have with my home address on it)
I arrived in Cameroon with so many documents printed

Arrival in Yaounde Airport, Cameroon 🇨🇲Away

If you are arriving by land, then I don’t have experience of that so I will write about my airport arrival into Cameroon. I landed in Yaounde Airport on a flight from Casablanca in Morocco. Initially I had planned to have 2 or 3 days in Yaounde and 2 or 3 days in Douala but the weirdest thing was the flight to Yaounde was more expensive than the flight to Douala!! This was crazy for me, as I could have just got off in Yaounde anyway! But I stayed on to Douala in the end, which I had paid less for! I stayed on the plane in Yaounde, it was the same flight.

Arrival in Yaounde but I stayed on the plane

After a brief stopin Yaounde, some passengers got off and more got on and we made the short 1 hour flight to Douala, which is not the capital city (Yaounde is), but the port city and the economic capital.

Arrival in Douala Airport – Cameroon 🇨🇲Visa Issuance

Within an hour we had arrived in Douala. I went to immigration with ALL my documents. I also filled in the immigration forms that were there.

Arrival in Douala Airport – Visa Issuance

It was a fairly easy process compared to many of my visa situations before. I handed in all documents, some weren’t even checked. They took my photo and my fingerprints / thumbprints and I am issued with a one page sticker visa in my passport which looked like this below.

It was put in my passport on 28th March 2024 and is valid until the 6th July 2024. It is a multipl entry visa so I can come and go into Cameroon as many times as I want until 6th July 2024! I take my passport to immigration and they stamp me in! Welcome to Cameroon!

And then…I am suddenly through immigration, through customs and out in the amazing open air of Cameroon! I have done it! I have lived a dream I had since 1990! I am here to explore Douala!

“He’s the only swinger in town” – UK Commentator on the Roger Milla corner flag celebration (1990)

While Douala isn’t Cameroon’s capital city per se, nor is it Roger Milla’s birthtown, it certainly has a capital city vibe. To all intents and purposes, this feels like a capital and indeed it serves at Cameroon’s seaport and business centre. My first landing ever in Cameroon was actually in Yaounde, where I flew in on Air Maroc from Casablanca (a city and airport I have passed through fivce now!). Having got my Cameroon visa approved online, I was in transit only in Yaounde, the capital city. This meant my border control and issuing of the visa into the passport would actually take place in Douala. I landed, slightly tired but bouyant and really living my childhood dream which dated back to 1990 and the Cameroon adventure at the World Cup! I was totally ready for this and suitably inspired!

Importantly, you need to know that Douala is a cool city. Cameroonians are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people I have ever met. Douala is welcoming to the core! This is why backpacking in Cameroon was worth waiting for!

Friendly locals in Douala Cameroon!!

Inspired by the exploits of Roger Milla, Franky Omam Biyick and Cyrille Makanaky, my 1990 Cameroon dream was finally realised in 2024. Latecomer loyal. I even shouted “Omam-Biyick” to random guys and immediately it’s a conversation starter. Cameroon is epic; a country beyond my wildest 1990 dreams!!

I got in touch with local businessman and top tour guide Mebah Markdonald and we met up at my trendy lodge, The Foyer Du Marin. Mebah runs a tour company called Discover Cameroon Tours and they can tailor any trip to your needs! Mebah can help with your visa and is one of the coolest, most down-to-earth tour managers I have met!

With Clement and Mebah in a Bolongi Ba coffee shop in Douala

This is just a quick run through of the main sights that I enjoyed in Douala. Of course, you might find others to peak your interest. For me it was all about the football, the people, the 1990 dream, a few bars and some art and other sights!

Finally backpacking in Cameroon

1.Stade Mbappe Leppe

Of course, this had to be done. I actually attended a football match in Cameroon! I did it at the famous Stade Mbappe Leppe!

Stade Mbappe Leppe

Samuel Mbappe Leppe is a legend and this stadium is named after him, in the Akwa district of Douala!! The stadium was pretty near my lodge. I will write a completely separate post about my football experience in Cameroon. It blew my mind – I was at a top division play-off match and I met Samuel Eto’o, chatted to him and got his autograph. He was sitting behind me and watching the match in the hot sun! What a gentleman!

I was drinking 7% whiskey Colas behind the nets and I watched a pulsating 1-1 draw between Stade Renard and Canon Yaounde. You can’t make this up! Thanks to Mebah and Clement for helping organise this incredible trip to the football stadium!

2.Espace Doual’art (Art Museum)

This was a quite excellent art museum. They have exhibitions of top notch Cameroonian art in a cosy wee building with a courtyard and garden. You can grab a coffee here too, but I was actually on a trip by car with Discover Cameroon tours and had a beer with me as it was a hot day!

Espace Doual’art (Art Museum)

Also at the art museum is a video room and presentation that we watched. All the art we saw in 3D that day was the work of Joseph Francis Sumegne. He specialises in making 3D modern art “statues” from nik naks, trash, bits of broken materials and left overs. The result is quite special.

3.Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul

I headed to the central Cathedral in Douala – Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. Cameroon is a much more Catholic country than some other parts of Africa I have been in, many of which were Islamic.

4.Douala Harbour

The harbour in Douala is hard to miss, most of the industry is based close to the Wouri River, which leads into the Atlantic Ocean. My lodge had a viewpoint over it, and has close links to the marine industry, being the home for German Seafarers.

5.Artisan Craft Market

I still love these wee craft markets in Africa! This one in Douala had a mix of wedding gifts, tourist souvenirs, football shirts, art and interior fashion. I don’t travel to go shopping though, so all I bought was a fridge magnet for Mum!

6.Parc Bonanjo

Most cities have some kind of freedom/independence square. This one I visited is known as Parc Bonanjo and is near the main post office, plus the art gallery. The monument by the pool in the centre represents those who fought in the war from 1914 – 1918.

7.Bolongi Ba Cafe

One of the biggest surprises for me is just how good Cameroonian coffee is. An absolute spot hitter. We headed to the cosy Bolongi Ba Cafe and were served by Sydonie two latte style coffees. From now on, if I see any cafe in the world advertising Cameroonian coffee, I’m having it!

8.Local Bar

I will write a separate post for my Thirsty Thursdays series about bar hopping in Douala, but one thing I wanted to do was drink in a very local bar and I went with my friend Aron. This was a small roadside bar and we just sat on stools chatting. When there is football on, these bars can get packed!

9.New Liberty Statue Monument Roundabout

I head with Clement out of Akwa district to a prominent junction and while he is filling his car up with petrol, I ask him if I can have a beer in the petrol station and he says yeah sure. Within minutes, I’ve bought a beer in the petrol station and am drinking it chatting away to Cameroonians here!

Chatting to locals in the petrol station only to realise we need to go to the monument and the church!

Then Clement and I dander over to the monument in the middle of the roundabout and I pose like it. It’s a huge monument.

10.Leclerc Statue

Philippe François Marie Leclerc de Hauteclocque was a Free-French general during the Second World War. He became Marshal of France posthumously in 1952, and is known in France simply as le maréchal Leclerc or just Leclerc. There’s a statue of him here by a wall of art but it’s protected behind a fence as it is still controversial.

We checked out a few more sights such as some German and French colonial buildings, the Palais of Justice, roadside markets, another church and a few monuments, but those 10 were my main ones with football of course being number one. I deliberately didn’t do too much in Cameroon as I have a desire to go back and in fact I skipped the beaches, Mount Cameroon, Limbe, Yaounde and the main National Football Stadium! Backpacking In Cameroon: My Cool Stay At Foyer du Marin, Douala 🇨🇲

“Omam-Biyik? Oh and he scored” – Football Commentator (1990).

I finally lived out a childhood dream in March 2024 when I arrived in Cameroon! Ever since Omam-Biyik’s header in 1990 for Cameroon against Argentina, I have followed Cameroon’s football results. Cameroon finished the match with 9 men, but won the match 1-0, later winning the group and progressing to the quarter finals.

Forward Francois Omam-Biyick from Cameroon scores on a header as Argentinian defenders Nestor Lorenzo (L) and Juan Simon look on 08 June 1990 in Milan during the World Cup opening match between Cameroon and Argentina. Despite two expulsions, Cameroon upset the defending World champions 1-0. AFP PHOTO

Well fast forward from 1990 to 2024 and my experience backpacking in Cameroon blew my expectations and completely exceeded them! Before my trip, I had to go through a gruelling online visa process for a Cameroon tourist visa, but I got there! To start with, I stayed in this excellent place – Foyer Du Marin in Douala. It feels like a mix of a backpacker’s hostel with a business mindset. It is excellent, I felt at home immediately here.

Of course it helped that my arrival into Cameroon meant an ice cold Harp lager beer straight away! Yes, Harp Lager, and very similar in taste and look to the Harp Lager I grew up drinking in Bangor in Northern Ireland! They also gave me a multiple entry tourist visa, so I can even go back again!

If you get booked in to the Foyer Du Marin, you will love this blend of internationalism here down near the harbour in Douala, Cameroon. Here are some cool reasons why I loved it.

1.The History

The Foyer du Marin in Douala is a cooperation of the Eglise Evangelique du Cameroun and the German Seamen Mission – it has been there since 1964! For sure in that time, it has experienced a wild mix  of tourists, business travellers and backpackers.

2.It has a swimming pool

I loved the fact there is a swimming pool, a bar and leafy gardens. I don’t often have swimming pools on my journeys but actually I did in Sierra Leone and in The Gambia (twice). I Douala, I met up with my friend Aron (who I had met previously at the airport in Guinea). I also toured the museum, churches, art gallery and football stadiums, but seriously, I actually just enjoyed relaxing in Cameroon here. Hardcore backpacking doesn’t mean firing every sight into your backpack. Sometimes you just want to chill out with a pool dip.

I organised a tour with Mebah Markdonald, a local businessman and tour guide at Discover Cameroon and I will be writing about Mebah and his tour soon! As well as the backpacking sights, I went groundhopping and barhopping too. It exceeded my expectations and guess what?? I actually met Samuel Eto’o! And not just met him, he was in the next seat to me for part of the match and I shook his hand, got his autograph and enjoyed a short chat.

3.Cosy Rooms

I was upstairs in a cosy room with an ensuite shower room. This was the perfect place to chill out for me. I had air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a fridge!

4.Free Wi-Fi

Of course Wi-Fi in Africa can be slow but at least it is free here and it works. I had some online jobs to solve during my stay and I was able to get most of them done here.

5.Your hosts

I met Klaus, my warm and friendly host here. Klaus is from Germany and he runs this place with his wife Ina and daughter. It’s a difficult full-time job, but they manage to do it well and even Klaus has time to join me for a beer on my birthday. Yes, when the clock struck midnight on my 44th birthday, I was in Cameroon, with a flight to Gabon on the same day. Klaus also helped out with airport transfers and a money issue I had at the time, so I really am grateful for it all and would definitely stay here again if I return to Douala!
