Cooking In Your Sleeper Van

Using the cooking facilities in your camper van when on a road trip is one of the best ways to cut costs and save time. However, with limited storage capacity and electricity, cooking in your sleeper van rental does come with some challenges. Here are some tips to deal with these issues and overcome them:

  •       Don’t go overboard: It is best to prepare only those meals on your road trip that do not involve much maintenance. Pre-cooked or frozen food is one of the best options you can consider while on a road trip since they do not require many ingredients. Furthermore, since you are in a moving car and wouldn’t have a lot of space to dispose of your leftovers, it is better to cook in a limited capacity so that you don’t end up littering around.

  •       Do the dishes as quickly as you can: There is obviously a limited water supply when you are in a camper van, and thus there is only so much you can do. And hence it is better that you are intelligent and quick with your dishes. Washing a hot pan is relatively easier than cleaning a pan with food congealed on it. It also saves a lot of water.
  •   Do not buy smelly food: When you are on a road trip, you are basically cooking in the same place you are sleeping. And nobody likes to go to sleep on a stinking bed, which is why it is critical you only buy those food items that do not have a lingering smell. Furthermore, it would help if you also were mindful of what you put down in the sink. You should clear the waste in the night itself to prevent waking up to the smell of your last night’s dinner.
  •       Cook smaller portions: It is alright to cook bulk meals when you’re home since you have plenty of space to store the leftovers. However, this is not ideal in a campervan. Try cooking smaller portions when you are on your trip, which can be stored in proper containers or bags. It is best to buy smaller amounts of food to avoid waste, or you could also consider buying zip lock bags for storing food on a road trip.
  •       Better to cook outside: Lastly, it would be great if you do not cook in your sleeper van at all. It is possible that you don’t always have the facilities for cooking outside, but whenever you do, it is better to use camp kitchens or public BBQ for your cooking. This will also have an added bonus for meeting new people and forming new connections when you are on the trip.
