Essay Writing and Travel Writing: Differences and Similarities

With so many writing styles out there, this article will look at some similarities and differences between travel writing and essay writing. The one thing that many people don’t know is they do indeed share a few similarities and differences. It is only people who write a lot of content that are aware of any similarities and differences that exist. Below are some things readers need to be aware of when it comes to these two different writing styles.

Capturing the reader’s attention

Travel writing and essay writing all need to grab the reader’s attention within the first few lines. Failure to do so makes readers not even bother reading the rest of the content even if it is a well-written piece according to academic experts.

Luring readers is very important and that is why a good writer will have an effective opening line that convinces the reader that the writer has something important that they want to say. The strategies that writers use to lure readers into travel writing and essay writing are different but the end goal is very much the same.

Essays are known to be at their best when the first sentences challenge the reader’s intellect. They want to be educated and told something they are not aware of through compelling facts and even stats.

Travel Writing on the other hand goes for a more emotional approach by describing things in a way that keeps readers wondering what will happen next. A good writer of travel content will always keep readers guessing what will happen next in their adventures.

P.S: In case you are wondering what makes me write well! I use a few online tools, like an online paraphraser to fine-tune my words and a summarizer to summarize my paragraphs effectively. Besides, I also use Grammarly to make sure you are not reading content that has grammar and spelling mistakes.

Determining the purpose of the article or paper

Travel writing and essay writing have another thing in common which is to communicate information to readers. As far as the similarities go, they end there because essays are more informative and have to produce evidence to back up their claims.  You must be sure you are writing well – I find it best to do my paper with best writer available.

Travel writing is different because it tells a story designed to inform as well as entertain the person reading. Good travel writing involves putting pieces together to form a very big narrative that will convey meaning and keep the readers invested in it.

Essays are not designed to do that because they avoid emotion and only focus on being objective on a particular subject and backing everything up with evidence and facts. Any information found needs to be analyzed in essays while travel articles don’t require someone to analyze a lot of information because one is talking about their own experiences.

The use of evidence

Both sets of writing need to use some sort of evidence to back up their claims. The information that is collected is very different which is no surprise because they are two separate works of art. Essays need a lot of primary and secondary data to be collected.

The sources need to be up-to-date and should come from academic sources to be considered credible. Travel articles for the most part come from the evidence coming from the writer’s perspective and what they’ve experienced.

It doesn’t rely on academic sources because as pointed out before, it is about telling a story. One might think that this might make this type of content less credible, but this is further from the truth.

Crediting sources

According to experts, essays require students to cite their sources properly otherwise they might be flagged for plagiarism. Plagiarism is the last thing any students want to deal with because they can be suspended from their academic courses which will slow down their studies.

To prevent their work from being flagged for plagiarism, students can hire paper writing services that can do the work for them or run an originality check on their own. There are so many programs and free websites students can see to see how original the work they have produced is.

Travel writing on the other hand doesn’t require a lot of effort when it comes to citing sources because it doesn’t cater to an academic audience like essays do. Students are required to list their source systematically using styles such as APA, Chicago, MLA, and Havard referencing styles.

This is done so that the original content credited for the ideas in a student’s work can easily be traced. Travel articles take more of a journalistic approach; sources can be named but not cited in the content.

The main sources of information when it comes to travel articles are things like interviews rather than data already published by others. This makes the pieces more engaging to readers as they are a bit more personal.

Format

Students always say that essay writing takes a formal approach with everything being neatly presented and organized without the use of slang words or any explicit language.  Travel writing doesn’t follow such rules and is less formal, making the language appeal to the emotions and senses of the readers.

When writing an essay, legitimate professional writing services and students need to make sure that they avoid using first-person, however, travel writing can involve the first person because it comes from the writer’s experiences.

Making sure that work appears formal can be very hard for some students and that is why they reach out to legit paper writing services for help. Travel writing can be likened to social media apps where writers talk about themselves. There is more freedom to express their thoughts in the content which is different from essay writing.

One can express their thoughts and opinions too when they are writing essays; however, their content will only hold water if it is backed up by credible sources. Using sources that are outdated and reliable can make a paper less appealing to read, meaning that sources have to be selected carefully and a format needs to be followed.

Final thoughts

Based on the point above, it is clear to see that both essay writing and travel writing have some things in common when it comes to getting information across and conveying meaning to readers. They also have a few differences too in terms of approach style as well as tone. Essay writing and travel writing are two different skills and if a student is always asking others for help, they should consider hiring a professional essay writing service.
